The drama was a ratings success in South Korea, with its final episode reaching a peak viewership rating of 47.7%, which is the 42nd highest-rated Korean drama episode of all time. The series is based on a comic strip lljimae published between 1975 and 1977, by Ko Woo-yung which was based on a Chinese folklore from the Ming Dynasty about a masked Robin Hood-esque character during the Jaeson era.
