Lawyer Ganapathi and his wife Annapurna are the eldest members of a family. His brother Subbu and his wife Anusuya live in the village. The duo treats their cousin brother Gopu, who is an idealist, as their own sibling. Annapurna is a chronic patient so Gopu's wife Susheela takes care of the family. Jealous of the bonding between Annapurna and Susheela, Anusuya creates a rift between them. Gopu and Susheela move to the village. Gopu propounds cooperative farming and prospers.

The film is based on Aasapoorna Devi's Bengali novel Agni Pariksha which was first remade as Telugu movie Mangalya Balam (1958); both the movies are made simultaneously by same banner & director and some of the scenes & artists are same in both versions. Kammo lives a very wealthy lifestyle with her widowed multi-millionaire dad, Girhdarilal, who would like her to get married to someone who is not after their wealth. To his dismay, she chooses to marry a Pilot named Sumankumar, who is known to womanize, and for his greed, so when he disapproves, she runs away. He advertises for her safe return and offers to pay Rs.1.25 Lakhs to the finder. Four days later, Kammo returns and she is not the same anymore, she is more humble, sober, and respectful. Fully appreciative of this, Girdharilal agrees to get her married to Sumankumar. Just before the marriage, a man named Sagar approaches them - and it is this visit that will change their lives forever.

Ratha Paasam

Raja is a petty thief living around the streets of Bombay, indulging in pickpocketing. In the same city lives Rani who makes a living through dancing. The two meet and fall in love. Raghu, the owner of a cycle company, lives luxuriously with his wife Sarala and children in Madras. Madhu, his manager, has been misappropriating the company funds with the help of his lover Manorama who Raghu is later attracted to. The company is soon closed due to losses, putting Sarala and her children in poverty.

Manohara produced by M. Somasundaram. The Sivaji Ganesan-L. V. Prasad production was distinct, becoming a cult classic. Karunanidhi virtually rewrote Mudaliar’s play, introducing interesting changes like the climactic sequence for which he drew inspiration from “Samson and Delilah”, especially the part where the blind Samson pushes the pillars down. Mu. Karunanidhi’s writing was superb with a contemporary touch. His dialogue had punch, satire, wit and humour. Sivaji Ganesan was excellent in his dialogue delivery and P. Kannamba who played the queen mother was equally brilliant. Her line, ‘Poruthathu podhum, pongi ezhu, maganey’, became quite famous.

Dil Deke Dekho

Neeta is a heiress, the only daughter of U.K. based Industrialist, Jagat Narayan. She is of marriageable age, and is presently wooed by Kailash, Chandra, and Raja. She prefers Chandra over Kailash and Raja, but subsequently changes her mind and falls in love with Raja. Things take a dramatic turn when Jagat and Neeta find out that Raja is not who is claims he is. When Raja defends himself, and calls himself Roop, his very own mother denies this claim, and instead states that Chandra is Roop, her only son. Raja alias Roop must now make attempts to prove himself, and realizes that this is indeed an uphill task.

The story revolves around a group of hardened bachelors who meet regularly, and eventually settle for marriage. Purna is a newcomer to the group of bachelors at Professor Chandra Basu's house. Also attending are three other bachelors Akshay, Bipin, and Shirish. Akshay is ousted from the committee when he gets married. He suggests that all members meet at his place instead. Nirmala, the Professor's daughter also joins the crowd becoming the only female member. Purna is attracted to Nirmala and suggests marriage, which Nirmala refuses. Akshay has three sisters Shailabala a child widow, Nripabala and Nirabala. His mother is busy fixing matches for Nripabala and Nirabala. Finally, the two sisters are matched with Shirish and Bipin, while Nirmala and Purna get together.
