Spare Queens

In bowling, there is nothing more daunting than the 7-10 split, which leaves two side pins in a position that is almost impossible to knock down. In this stirring sports film, the infamous split serves as a metaphor for not only a long-standing rivalry between two retired female bowlers, but also rare second chances to correct past mistakes. Produced by the team behind sleeper hit Love Lies (2024), this directorial debut shows us that bowling involves far more than just hitting wooden pins with a ball – it requires precise timing, immense strength, and grace under pressure.

The Path of Soul

Shifting his lens from Cantonese opera to Japanese Noh drama, documentary filmmaker Cheuk Cheung continues his exploration of complex gender issues ingrained in traditional theatres. For seven centuries, only the male body has been granted the privilege to inhabit this highly stylised art form that embraces spirituality in subtle movements. The film traces the journey of third-generation Noh performer Uzawa Hikaru, a young woman who makes her presence in the male-dominated space; yet behind the mask lies a daughter yearning to seek a resolution beyond her mother’s path – a quest to fuse body and soul in pursuit of the profoundly mysterious aesthetic.

The Rib of the Greater Bay Area

Fragmented coastal scenes scattered across the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area: a security guard on duty at a Shenzhen beach, a woman posing for bridal photos along the West Kowloon Waterfront Promenade, children playing in the shallows beneath a bridge, the transparent glass interior of the M+ Museum, the rooftop of Sky100, the upper reaches of the Pearl River, and the waterfront of Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, among others. Most of these filming locations were chosen from lists of photogenic sites popular on Xiaohongshu (RedNotes), i.e. places that have become “internet-famous” through a single viral post, attracting waves of photographers and tourists. Yet the artist deliberately diverges from these original images, turning away from the sharply defined details and edges of these celebrated sites. Instead, the camera retreats into marginalized zones at the limits of visibility, areas suffused with blinding halos of light.

Almost Home

The feature directorial debut of Jiang Wenjie, cinematographer and editor of Keep Rolling, explores the inner lives of three female Hong Kong writers: Hon Lai-chu, Lee Wai-yi, and Human Ip. Though their styles and thematic concerns differ considerably, the film shows that their literary works are all informed by their immediate surroundings, whether that be a childhood home, the streets of Sham Shui Po, or the cattle and woods near Lai Chi Wo village. Time may inevitably erode everything in this city, but these writers continue to tell their hometown's stories in their own unique ways.

Cold Cakes / 冰冷的蛋糕 / コールド・ケーキ

Built within the 3D worlds of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Condemned 2: Bloodshot, Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Saw II: Flesh & Blood, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Pastinaca Videotapes Plantation’s machinima exploit each engine’s abrupt, uncanny atmosphere, creating bizarre collages that challenge any single interpretative move. Cold Cakes / 冰冷的蛋糕 / コールド・ケーキ is no exception and adopts the look of damaged evidence. Burnt-in timestamps, murky contrast, smeared textures, and VHS-like degradation give the film the texture of a copied, handled, and partially lost recording. Moving between domestic interiors, found footage, flickering images, bodily aftermath, cryptic imagery and open-world urban drift, the film assembles fragments rather than a linear narrative. Working through a text-first method that pairs written themes with archival and game footage, PVP reflects on suppressed histories, hoaxes, mockumentaries, and the erasure of inconvenient events.
