The Horizon Guide to AI

The BBC's Horizon programme began in 1964, and since then has produced films looking at computer technology and the emergence of 'artificial intelligence'. Our dreams always begin with ideology and optimism, only for this optimism to be replaced with suspicion that AI machines will take over. However, as the Horizon archive shows, throughout each decade once we have learnt to live with the new emerging technology of the time, the pattern begins again. We become once more optimistic, before becoming fearful of it. The dream for decades had been for a computer with AI to be embedded within a humanoid robot, but just as scientists began to perfect machines with these qualities, something happened nobody expected. Today, AI systems power our daily lives through smart technology. We are currently experiencing a level of fear about the power of AI, but will we enter the next decade optimistic about all that AI can deliver - or fearful of its ability to control vast areas of our lives?

Generación Anti Todo

Generación Anti Todo establishes a dialogue between the generations raised in the 1980s and those that have done so in the 2000s, with the Basque punk group Eskorbuto as the connecting link. Generación Anti Todo departs from the usual documentary format to explore new questions from new perspectives: just as we idealize the memory of the dead, has Eskorbuto been mythologized? Has it become a capitalist product? What about the phenomenon in Latin America? Is punk dead?

Rockpool (For Jacques)

This video continues with my exploration of representation and the changes and transformations occurring in natural phenomena and the environment. Made by observing the intermittent changes in wind velocity working on and disturbing the water surface of a Rockpool. The perception of the rocks and pebbles on the bottom change in degrees from clarity to complete abstraction. The title of this work reflects on a conversation held with Jacques Perconte concerning visual transformation.

The Evil Eye

The sense of rituals and the manifestation of the sacred has underpinned all of Clément Cogitore's oeuvre, inspired by gatherings, communal phenomena, and the expression of beliefs of today, be they erratic or diffuse, or without a defined subject. The spread of images and the way in which they have become commonplace constitute the off-screen "narrative" of this approach: the artist confronts and responds to this with a visual intensity and a sense for storytelling that borders on the fantastic.

The Archive

This film is created with traditional documentary techniques - it is compiled from archival documents that include audio recordings by David Drucker, son of the Russian Jews who escaped before the Revolution, and Susan, his daughter. Drucker suffered not during the Holocaust, but later during the McCarthy years, when he became a victim of the witch hunt and was suspected in collaboration with the communist regime, from which his family had run away. Together with Drucker, we witness the paradoxical paranoia that used to infect America in those days.

Abducted - Elizabeth I's Child Actors

The gripping true story of a boy abducted from the streets of Elizabethan London, and how his father fought to get him back. Presented by acclaimed children's author and academic Katherine Rundell, this intriguing tale is set behind the scenes in the golden age of Shakespeare and sheds a shocking light on the lives of children long before they were thought to have rights. Thirteen-year-old Thomas Clifton was walking to school on 13 December 1600, when he was violently kidnapped. And what's most extraordinary is that the men who took him claimed that they had legal authority to do so from Queen Elizabeth I herself. Children are so often missing from history, but this tale has survived by the skin of its teeth. This inventive film pieces together Thomas Clifton's story from contemporary accounts, court documents, plays and poetry, with the missing gaps beautifully illustrated by vivid hand-drawn animation.
