Mirror

A bedridden husband and his deranged wife live in a shabby old mountainside house. One day, the bored wife goes out to collect trash. As she passes by a deserted cemetery and ruin, she comes across a mirror and takes it home. The mirror connects the past with the present. The bedridden husband can see the reflection of the yellowed photos on the wall in the mirror, prompting him to reminisce about his past affairs during the Japanese rule. One day, the wife ventures out again and encounters a nightmarish air raid…

Surf

On a hot summer day, a car is stuck in a traffic jam. The kids are sleepy in the backseat. They seem to feel something cool when they’re half awake. All of a sudden, they’re riding the waves with their feet on surfing boards, surfing in the gridlock. The streets in a big city are like rivers and their branches, and they’re racing each other. Cars, vans, trucks and buses are surging like sea waves. Suddenly, a super big wave comes and knocks them off their surfing boards! To their surprise, a bucket of water is splashed over the windshield. It turns out that their mom has driven the car into a car wash! It was just their imagination. They exchange a glance and smile.

Natalia

“Natalia” is a film I made in Poland from the perspective of an Asian student. I went abroad for a year, in order to escape from the monotonous life back home in Taipei—only to realize, that I had merely created a new kind of repetitive daily routine in a foreign land. The film presents the absurdity of everyday repetition with abstract imagery. Through the bilingual internal dialogue of the protagonist, Natalia, who becomes aware of this looping pattern, the film questions whether travel is an escape from the cycle or simply the beginning of a new one.

Farewell Party

“Lifeng Coal Mine” (利豐煤礦) in Sanxia, Taipei County, was once Taiwan’s largest specialized coal mine. Unable to compete with cheap imported coal amid Taiwan’s impending WTO accession, the mine shut down, leaving 118 miners unemployed and sparking disputes over pensions and severance pay. San Yan (《散宴》) follows several aging miners, including brothers Huang Wu-yi (黃武義) and Huang Rong-quan (黃榮全), documenting their reflections on unemployment and their lifelong labor underground. After sharing one final farewell banquet, the miners’ “black gold dream” disappeared together with the closing mine. Through the film, the director moves beyond stereotypical images of miners’ hardship, portraying instead the quiet resilience and optimism of these “last-generation miners.”

Summoner of Birds

"Yeti, we've got Shakespeare there."— Wisława Szymborska. This sentence feels like a call of human civilization toward the wild, and it deeply moved me. Summoner of Birds stems from my childhood imaginings, exploring the boundaries between humans and other creatures, merging these images with elements of the absurd. Wearing a Ghillie suit, I perform cello in St James's Park, London, embodying a quasi-human being. Pigeons gather and disperse with my movements, creating a subtle rhythm and poetic interaction.

The Snowy Night

The story describes a hunter who chased a snow roe deer, incurs the revenge of the Roe Beast, adding to the mystery of folklore. Created with hemp rope in stop-motion puppet animation, this project uses the lack of facial expressions in the puppets to create a spooky and terrifying atmosphere. The hand-drawn style at the beginning and end adds to the mystery of the legend, prompting contemplation on the delicate balance between humans and the environment, as well as our reverence for nature.

Change, Reset

The pandemic-born “emo rave”-categorised “Change, Reset ft. PRINCI” portrays how distressed human beings lean on their desire for intimacy and connection on chat apps, without any physical interaction. The personality-training AI chatbot app “Replika” and dating app “Tinder” specifically, became the inspiration for this music video. The First-Person point of view coupled with a “Pokémon GO”-like AR interface fills this journey with sorrow and uncertainty. As the story starts with a user (Sonia Calico) who refuses to update her AI chatbot (PRINCI), she desperately ventures to find the AI partner’s crystal avatar in limited time as the obsolete-version of the world around them starts to fall apart.

SEA 404

SEA 404 is inspired by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto’s series Seascapes, and French philosopher Jean Baudrillard’s essay The Vanishing Point of Communication. It questions the contemporary condition in which the computer mediates our experience, and parallels Sugimoto’s observation that media has transformed the way we see the world. In this film, the shift from the horizon line to the world of the onlooker is underlined by the sudden entrance of everyday sounds. The soundtrack is made from field recordings taken every morning at the same time and location for thirty consecutive days.
