The World of the Lindisfarne Gospels

Filmed on location across England and Ireland, this program takes a close look at the Lindisfarne Gospels—a priceless work of art and one of Christianity’s most enduring symbols of faith—and the historical and religious contexts in which it was created. Michelle Brown, curator of illuminated manuscripts at the British Library, explains who made it and why, presents new findings about its dating, and shows how it unites a remarkable range of motifs and styles from the Celtic Iron Age, Germanic prehistory, ancient and Christian Rome, Coptic Egypt, and Byzantium. A wealth of other devotional objects and images from early Christianity are also featured.

End Rolls #2

The original work End Rolls is a performance for three 16mm projectors. A color negative film was exposed directly to different sources of light (candlelight, stove, fire) with the intention of creating fluctuations of color throughout the reel. Three copies were made, each printed at a different level of light. In the performance, sounds are extracted through the lens of each projector using light-sensor microphones. Since mechanical film projectors don’t run entirely in sync, the three films play together in a dance—echoes of movements and sounds—to which I make further changes in performance by working with the projector controls. End Rolls #2 is a digital adaptation, for two fixed screens, that was made for a program at Arnolfini, Bristol.

Caravan of Death

“Where is my son? Why don’t they give him back to me?” In 1973, a month after Pinochet seized power in Chile, a helicopter headed north. 4 days later it returned. 71 people were dead. What was the real purpose of the Caravan of Death? Who gave the order? And where are the dead? 27 years later Pinochet is facing trial. Filmed undercover with Judge Juan Guzman as he builds the case against Pinochet, this documentary asks whether Chilean justice will respect the relatives of the executed and disappeared who cannot, and will not, forget them.

The North London Line

The North London Line was unique in being the only Network Rail route to be consistently featured on the London Underground map. 2006 was the last year of operation into North Woolwich by the class 313 EMUs. To record this for posterity, the train operator at the time, Silverlink Trains, allowed Video 125 cameras unrestricted access to train cab and stations along the route. The route was electrified at 25KV overhead to allow vital freight movements around the capital. One of the most unusual stations is that at Willesden Junction, the platforms being positioned above the West Coast Main Line and the affiliated “DC lines” from Euston to Watford. The history of the route is complex but totally fascinating, details of which are related en route by Rob Curling.

I Love Being HIV+

According to previous media reports, HIV positive men, or "gift-givers", who want to transmit the virus to so-called "bug chasers" - HIV negative or untested men - do so in an apparently negotiated exchange. HIV positive Ricky Dyer, who investigates the apparent bug chasing phenomenon for this documentary, says that an air of complacency about the realities of living with the virus may be one reason why infection rates have been rising. Dyer tries to find out the truth behind the reporting by going online on a gay dating website, saying he is an HIV positive man who wants to talk to bug chasers. However, Dyer is appalled to find dozens of apparent bug chasers contact him within days saying that they want to be "pozzed up" - infected with the virus. - Bugchasers seek sexual partners who are HIV positive for the purpose of having unprotected sex and becoming HIV positive; giftgivers are HIV positive individuals who comply with the bugchaser's efforts to become infected with HIV.

Charles Whitman - The Texas Sniper

Texas sniper Charles Whitman's story stands out for many reasons, not least of which being that it features a co-star - the University of Texas Tower from which he fired almost unimpeded for 96 minutes. On the surface, Charles Whitman would have seemed as steady and upstanding as the tower itself - he came from a wealthy, prominent family in Lake Worth, Florida, was a gifted student, an accomplished pianist and an Eagle Scout. But this veneer could not be further from the truth as this look inside his warped mind reveals. On August 1st 1966, Charles Whitman climbed the University of Texas Clock Tower with his high-powered rifles and killed 14 people and wounded 31 others. Interviews with those who knew him well and excerpts from Whitman's own writings reveal how his murderous personality was formed and why his violent nature remained hidden for so long.

Cities of Gold and Mirrors

Ciudades de oro y espejos (2009), shot in 16mm in Quintana Roo, is a film consisting of five scenes planned to occur principally in and around the city of Cancún, which was founded in 1970. There, a group of springbreakers; a hotel with dolphins in its pool; a member of the Bloods dancing atop a Mayan archaeological site called El Rey; the demolition of a mirrored building; and the interior of the night club Cocobongo appear one after the other, set to a particular looped recording: Le feu de St. Elme, by Haïm Saban and Shuki Levy. This music is part of the soundtrack to an animated series about Spanish conquistadors, Mysterious Cities of Gold (1982).

Views from Home

I had rooms at the front and back of the house and I recorded sunlight passing through them in the course of the day, as well as across the buildings seen from the windows. Sometimes I would set the time-lapse camera running and go off to work, leaving it to record the sunlight in the empty rooms. Another room in the flat was used for rehearsal by the saxophone player Alan Wilkinson. The soundtrack comes from recordings I made while walking from room to room as he was playing. This is mixed with a variety of music from the street, reflecting the multi-ethnicity of the location - Greek music, reggae, country & western. G.S. (LUXONLINE)

Genoa Red Zone

Indymedia UK presents 'Genoa: Red Zone' - a hard-hitting film which presents the real story of those brutal Italian days of protest. Eight months in the making with a cast of thousands, this hour-long documentary does not shy from the truth. Staggering images of violence provide gritty realism yet the beauty of resistance shines through. Despite the repression, a multitude of voices were heard in Genoa: Landless Peruvian peasants stood side by side with Sicilian cheese farmers; national boundaries were overturned as a global body of people demanded a world built on social and environmental equality. That flame - it appears - is impossible to extinguish.

Forgotten Bird of Paradise

An undercover documentary filmed in West Papua, providing a rare and moving insight into the long forgotten struggle for freedom of the Papuan people from Indonesian rule. For over 45 years a bitter independence struggle has been fought there between native Papuans and the occupying Indonesian regime, largely unnoticed by the outside world. It is estimated that at least 500,000 Papuans have been killed since the occupation of their land began. Thousands more have been victims of human rights abuses or 'disappeared' for voicing their support of the independence movement. Forgotten Bird of Paradise provides a rare and moving insight into a long forgotten struggle, and reveals how the Papuan peoples resilience and determination for freedom burns stronger now than at any time in history.
