The Sun and the Looking Glass – for one easily forgets but the tree remembers

Ein Qiniya, a small Palestinian village in the West Bank, occupied since 1967. This is where Milena Desse is to make her own enquiries: how can one decipher remaining traces and reconstruct History? How can one shine a light, as they say, on such places? Determined to unfold the layers and work out the creases like so many clues about some buried history, the young director strives like an archaeologist, equipped with a magnifying glass and a camera.

On Your Marks: Tension Lines

Lines come together and clash producing a creative disruption that leads to new lines being produced, borders dissolving and then reappearing. Clashing lines create new possibilities for redefinition. This short silent film employs digital green screen to create fleshy layers seeping underneath and being revealed, and other sets of imagery coming through. The lines that you can see were made in the physical world using marker pens and paper. The resulting line drawings were then documented and filmed where the camera moved across the drawn paper. Now existing digitally, the drawings were then layered over one another and green screen processes were applied to create arresting tensions between the lines. The marks without sound makes you stop from thinking about the moment it was drawn and now put into a different space the viewer concentrates on the layers – all these tensions in the lines being made.

Affordance

Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed », Francis Bacon. Around a low tree with twisted branches, a man seeks to rest. He doubles up. One lifts its paw, clings to a branch, the other sits on an uncomfortable curve, like a monkey trying to make its nest. There are three now, then four to explore the possibilities for action offered by the plant. This tree was waiting for him. The character stretches, hangs, lengthens. He becomes one with the tree and settles there, promising to visit it without hurting it. Of course, the tree is instrumentalized by becoming a chair or a bed, but no one cuts off its branches or assembles them to make them useful. The tree remains a tree, it becomes a temporary shelter, the act is reversible and, once the visitor has left, it will resume the course of its peaceful life, living being among the living.

Longing Souls

The 10-year-old Camila spends the summer with her grandmother, almost exclusively in the company of women. They lovingly look after each other; cook, eat and bathe together; care for their skin and talk a lot. Camila quickly realises that there is more that binds them together than mere kinship: a curse is said to have been cast on the women in the family, causing unhappiness in their relationships. This belief is convenient, given that Camila longs for nothing more than her parents’ separation.

The Infinite Confinement

In “Spaces #3”, 7 internationally acclaimed directors shot, after commissioning by the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, a short film at home, making their own timely comment on the new reality that we live in. The project is inspired by the book “Species of Spaces” by the French novelist, filmmaker, documentalist, and essayist, Georges Perec and the days of quarantine. The idea is to create a film at home, using the environment, the people or the animals in that space. The only outdoor areas that may be used are outdoor living spaces, such as the terrace, the garden, the balcony and the stairwell. “The Infinite Confinement” is Victor Moreno’s submission.
