1999 - WISH YOU WERE HERE

When death haunts a high school in a small town in the late 1990s, everyone is forever transformed. In this gentle, prismatic film, Samara returns to the town she fled as a teen to re-immerse herself in the memories still lurking there, in its spaces and within the dusty boxes of diaries, photos and VHS tapes. 1999 is not a ghost story, but the ghosts are palpable at every turn. The snow-covered streets, the school's hallways and lockers are preserved as in a dream. The absences left by the relentless teenage suicides still shimmer with questions, trauma and regret. Samara encounters people who are as breathtaking as they are heartbroken, and, finally, 16 years later, the community strengthens itself by sharing the long-silenced memories. Ultimately the film weaves together multiple voices in a collective essay on how grief is internalized-and how, as children, we so painfully learn to articulate our desire to stay alive.

L'unione falla forse

L'unione falla forse is a documentary film that intertwines the life of homogenitorial families with the bizarre theories of anti-LGBT exponents, in a single story. Two absolutely distant and distinct worlds that needed to be confronted directly, due to the exponential growth of proLife extremist Catholic movements and their political ascent, thanks to the exploit of the right-wing parties that welcomed them into their row (the Fontana family minister and Senator Pillon, both members of the Family Day, are a clear example). But also because of the growing need for legal recognition that homogenitorial families are clamoring for, to which sometimes only the magistracy grants approval, due to the gaps in the law on civil unions of 2016 caused by the cutting of the Stepchild Adoption and the obligation of loyalty among the partners. The result is a desecrating mix between the silent normality of these families and the bawling madness of their protesters.

Under the name PasSage, Ugo and his friends organize underground parties in unusual locations around Paris. The parties are, as one of them puts it, “The last place of expression for us. Truly free.” Their playful search for adventure takes them to forbidden places, the only spots left to explore in a city where every centimeter is in use. It might be a location in Versailles, an abandoned train next to a monument, a deserted military fort, or perhaps a cave. The decision is made only after an expedition with a backpack and a flashlight to explore the site and its approach routes thoroughly. Partygoers learn of the location just before the party starts, and there are strict rules for them to follow.

Life in Neuperlach, a Munich suburb, is quaint. It is a safe neighborhood, where people know and greet each other. Everybody has their own backyard; single car garages are lining the narrow footpaths and everything is groomed. But for some time now that peacefulness is troubled, because refugees are supposed to move in next door. As some of the residents are afraid of the noise to be expected, they are putting up a noise protection wall. Biotope shows the life of the locals and gets to the bottom of the reason for building that wall.

Following Landstück (2016), Volker Koepp's documentary Seestück is about the magical, natural setting of the Baltic Sea, its coasts and its people – including fishermen, seamen, scientists and young people on both the Baltic and Scandinavian shores. Conversations meander from Caspar David Friedrich to Copernicus, Rousseau and Kant, or simply life itself. Present concerns address the sea's threatened ecosystem and political frictions among the neighbouring countries. One universal truth applies for the small Baltic Sea too: The landscape is a window to the world.

Biggi lives with her two daughters, four dogs and her exboyfriend Alfred on a dilapidated farm in a small village in Saxony-Anhalt. Biggi and Alfred are out of work and they live very modestly. The 14 and 17 year-old daughters Saskia and Denise should really go to school, but there are always reasons for them to stay at home. This gives rise to tension with Alfred. We accompany them during their conflict-ridden everyday lives and learn something about their dreams, fears and hopes. And how difficult it is to break out of a circle.

The Second Attack

As a child Ibrahim Arslan survived the arson attack on his parents’ home in Mölln in which three members of his family were killed. Today he says that his family suffered not just one, but two attacks. After the Molotov cocktails had burnt out, the Arslan family became a target of attacks again, this time coming from the media, politics and society. These attacks were worse than the incendiary devices because they could have been avoided, Arslan says. In her film, Mala Reinhardt asks why even today many victims of radical right-wing violence are forced to live through the same experience of being treated with hostility and criminalised. The victims, who have formed a network, analyse with impressive clarity which conditions make racism still socially acceptable in our country. The essential thing now is to listen to them. Apparition

The hundreds of sketches made by Gustave Moreau exploring the character of Salome, as portrayed in his series, L’Apparition are the starting point of this practice-based research project. As an extension of Moreau’s images of Salome, the project considers gestural control sound design based on “striking” and “bowing” movements, and how these might operate as metaphors by mapping gestures with strong physical associations to sound and rhythm modules specifically designed to represent them. Apparition also investigates music and visuals in the form of a contemporary “composed novel”, exploring the syntax of found footage, pattern, texture, colour, text, gesture and electroacoustic composition.
