History of the German Luftwaffe 1914 - 1945

No sooner the first aircraft rose into the sky, the military took hold of the new invention. As far back as World War 1 daredevil pilots engaged into the fighting and aces like Manfred von Richtofen or Ernst Udet became admired heroes. Practically disbanded due to the Versailles Treaty, the German Air Force developed in hiding. After having been "service-tested" in the Spanish Civil War, Hitler built her up with vigor to a powerful military machine, which made possible the "blitz" victories ine the first year of the war. To counter the rising allied airpower, german engineers took the first jet aircraft and rockets. Revolutionary innovations as they were, too late to hinder the military collapse. In depth and by partly never before seen takings in colour as well as black and white, this film shows the development of the german Air Force in the years 1914 until 1945.

Music No Music

Jörg Adolph’s playful On-the-road documentary follows the face-off of two bands that are both quite fond of experimentation. The Notwist and the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra ignore genre boundaries as they hop from style to style, channeling their way through polymorphic soundscapes, wild and beautiful. From the recording of Notwist’s “The Devil, You + Me” album, via collective rehearsals in Berlin, to concerts in Hamburg, Amsterdam and Munich: these kindred spirits always try to improve, try to refine the patterns and arrangements. It seems as if the musicians main concern is to keep the songs in constant motion – Music Not Music.

Der Hamburger Feuersturm 1943

In July 1943, the Allies carried out heavy air raids on Hamburg. The day and night attacks, which lasted from July 25 to August 3, 1943, were codenamed “Operation Gomorrah.” Today, only a few survivors of the firestorm who consciously experienced and survived it are still alive. In the first part of this documentary, the so-called “experience generation” has its say. The second part is dedicated to the children of the survivors. What impact did their parents' traumatic war experiences have on those born in the 1950s and 1960s?

Flight

Jewish painter Leopold Mayer fled his native Frankfurt at the rise of the Nazi regime. Although briefly finding refuge in France, where he changed his name to Leo Maillet, his stay was cut short by Germany's invasion of Paris. Flucht traces Maillet's escape from the Gestapo and the French police, using Maillet's "Entre chien et loup" series of paintings as the framework for the film. Accompanied by Maillet's son Daniel, Peter Nestler revisits the late artist's hiding places and depicts a hauntingly beautiful portrait of an outstanding artist on the run.

Falco meets Amadeus

The musical "Falco meets Amadeus" is about two exceptional figures in music history, namely Falco and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Mozart and Falco were great geniuses who worked to the point of self-destruction. Falco is not the big superstar, but a staged character - Mozart is portrayed in the musical as a musical genius with a soulmate. The musical looks behind the scenes of show business, which not only has its good (acclaimed performances) but also bad sides. Furthermore, the story is largely based on motifs from the classic Faust story (pact with the devil, fallen girl, etc.).

Tell me on Tuesday

'Tell me on Tuesday', wrote Franz Kafka in a letter to Milena Jesenská. He planned to visit her on Tuesday, stopping in Vienna on the way to Prague. 'It would be most sensible to tell you today where I would like to wait for you, but I would suffocate till we met... Is there in the world, Milena, as much patience as is necessary for me? Tell me on Tuesday.' Kafka's longing to see Milena again, before he was able to spend four days with her in Vienna, was marked by delay, and a transition to written form in letters and diary entries. A trembling before and a drained after frame those days in July, 1920, the particulars of which remain a blank. Astrid Ofner matched Kafka's love letters to Milena with fragile images that permit the existence of that blank space, making it visible rather than filling it in.
