Tiananmen

A CCTV-commissioned, 8-part series shot between 1988 and 1990, but barred from being released after the events of June 4th. A production of the Structure, Wave, Youth, Cinema (SWYC) Experimental Group, an informal collective of young filmmakers founded in the summer of 1989 and devoted to the production of documentaries, that includes: this series' two directors, Shi Jian and Chen Jue, as well as Beijing TV's Wang Zijun, and this series' screenwriter, Kuang Yang (under the name Guang Yi). Tiananmen documents various aspects of life surrounding the Square: survivors of the imperial era, street performers, fledgling entrepreneurs, fashion school students, foreigners marrying Chinese nationals, and so forth. Each episode starts with a close-up of a giant portrait of Mao hung over the Square, and proceeds as a hybrid of archival footage, direct cinema, and cinema verité, weaving a permanent dialectic between the present and the past, daily life and history.

MONGOLIAN PATY

At first, this film seems like a simple one constructed out of a series long one-shot takes, but the second half is shot with a manual shutter release that subtly alters the shooting speed. This form of shooting makes one think, for example, of the changing speed of hand move- ments during a musical recital. The effect of this style is a transfiguration of Mongolia's natural wonders into a personified landscape, and a humorous portrayal of things moving ever so slightly (flowers, clouds, animals, exercising women). The title "paty" is a variation of “party"; by leaving out one letter and by recording the title in a personalized style, the director claims a broad array of meanings becomes possible. This is a piece in the director's series “Film as Dance."

Repechage

Two friends - Min-gyu, a wild-animal vet, and Eun-hae, a fashion photographer - commiserate with each other when each realizes that the person they love is no longer in love with them. In anger, Eun-hae smashes up her boyfriend's car; in frustration, Min-gyu breaks glasses and carves up a spider. Min-gyu and Eun-hae each urge the other to be calm, to move on, to forget about it. Good advice, if only they could take it. "Why do humans need love?," these friends ask each other. Can jealousy, anger, and desire for revenge lead two jilted lovers to embrace what they have?
