Fidati's Room

Fedati lives in a small room nearby Taichung train station, in which she makes Indonesian food and clay craft; it is also the favorite place of her migrant sisters in the area. They share about work as a domestic helper and a factory worker; they talk about being homesick and how much they miss their families. The journey of Fedati in Taiwan has been recorded in this 16 square meters room. She started as a domestic helper, and later became a clay artist, a migrant culture activist, and an owner of a take-away Indonesian food business. To be even better, she joined a master program in a university in Taiwan. In her room, we can have a peek into the possibility and vibrancy of migrant lives in Taiwan.

Blended Vision

"Blended Vision" is a duo-screen video. The screen on the left shows a video about Lau's experience of accompanying his father during eye surgery. As the father's vision gradually becomes disabled, he begins to rely on his daughter's eyes to see the world, and the roles of caregiver and caretaker are reversed. In the series of events from the discovery of the disease to examination, surgery, and recovery, the emotional changes between father and daughter constantly overlap and stagger, and are connected by an invisible line. The video on the right, Lau uses a camera lens to imitate the blurred vision from the eyes of her father, and returns to the places he passes by every day, the park near their home, the same teahouse, the same bus route, the same way home... to reproduce those things that are seen repeatedly in the scenery.

In 2017, four bands from the Chinese mainland toured in Taiwan. It marks a historic moment in the cross-strait subcultural communication. The tour is the biggest underground rock event made by rock bands from the Chinese mainland in Taiwan. With the GT Bitches's tour as the main plot, the film is an interview of 10 punk bands, gig organizers,and music fans from the Chinese mainland and Taiwan. Farewell Party

“Lifeng Coal Mine” (利豐煤礦) in Sanxia, Taipei County, was once Taiwan’s largest specialized coal mine. Unable to compete with cheap imported coal amid Taiwan’s impending WTO accession, the mine shut down, leaving 118 miners unemployed and sparking disputes over pensions and severance pay. San Yan (《散宴》) follows several aging miners, including brothers Huang Wu-yi (黃武義) and Huang Rong-quan (黃榮全), documenting their reflections on unemployment and their lifelong labor underground. After sharing one final farewell banquet, the miners’ “black gold dream” disappeared together with the closing mine. Through the film, the director moves beyond stereotypical images of miners’ hardship, portraying instead the quiet resilience and optimism of these “last-generation miners.”

Memories Frozen in Time

Eighty years after World War II, memory clings like frost to glass-blurred, fractured, yet never fully fading. Filmmaker Ming Chun retraces the forgotten journey of Taiwanese soldiers conscripted by Japan, captured by the Soviets, and exiled to Siberia. From departure and defeat to captivity and return, he follows a path of war and displacement-toward a home that no longer felt like home. Across Taiwan, Japan, and Russia, he searches for traces of their lives-abandoned camps, fading photographs, fragments of memory-while opening a dialogue across three generations: elders whose recollections falter, children burdened with unanswered questions, grandchildren confronting fractured identities. When history falls silent, what do we hear? And where do restless souls finally belong?

Quousque eadem? (or a self-portrait)

This work started as a personal project. The artist initially intended to create a one-man home video only for himself, hoping to gather snippets from his life abroad to represent them as vital parts of his life and temporary definitions, forming a time capsule created to commemorate his graduation. A few months later, the artist restarted this unfinished project and changed his intention during editing. By remaking this essay film using several (pseudo-) video diaries and two different mediums—digital recording and digitized Super 8mm footage, the artist translates private, intimate whisperings into his reflections about memory, viewing, film, and the process of image (re-) production.

Empire's Borders I

Made in 2008–2009, Taiwanese artist Chen Chieh-Jen’s Empire’s Borders conveys the real-life experiences of women who have attempted to cross Taiwan’s borders: first, Taiwanese women denied tourist visas to visit the United States, and second, women from mainland China who have married Taiwanese men and have been denied permission to enter or remain in Taiwan. Shot on 35mm film in stark black and white, each woman relates her story in her own words. The bureaucratic settings for these short monologues recall the interview centre or airport immigration hall where the encounters originally took place.

See You, White House

In 1956, the U. S. Naval Medical Research Unit No.2 built a pure white building in Shuilin Township, Yunlin County, and began a seven-year research project. The building was white, clean and bright, so that local residents call it the "American White House." The various things in the research process made the residents quite curious and suspicious of this mysterious building. The adults even reminded the children not to approach it. However, Taiwan didn’t know much about this project. After the project ended, all relevant materials were taken to the United States and stored at Johns Hopkins University. So the team went to America to find research materials and bring them back to Taiwan. The director’s father was one of the members of the research project then. Therefore, the shooting process is not only to dig out the past, but also to evoke the youthful memories of those elders.

More than Necessary

Suthat, a young man from the northeastern part of Thailand, has worked in Taiwan for six years. He does not aim to save money, nor does he have any plans for the future. He has just moved to Taichung. Four months ago, he visited the ASEAN Square for the first time. It was in a Thai disco club that he met the film crew that was scouting locations and looking for materials for a production to be shown in a group exhibition at MoCA Taipei in May. For reasons unknown, the film crew invited Suthat to join the film. That day, Suthat came to the ASEAN Square to celebrate the Songkran festival with his friends. During the past four months, he has made quite a few friends; and today, the film crew with a Thai interpreter became his new friends.
