Sickert vs Sargent

Sickert vs. Sargent brings to life two of the biggest characters in modern British art; Walter Sickert - the gruff, aggressive man-of-the-people; and John Singer Sargent - the urbane and charming dandy. The film focuses on some of the most beautiful and alarming paintings ever made in this country; pictures of aristocrats and prostitutes, coronations and killings, opera houses and music halls, and will evoke the long-lost atmosphere of Edwardian London. But above all it will show that from their two outposts in Chelsea and Camden, Sickert and Sargent were waging a war whose legacy still haunts us today.

Annlee You Proposes

In this chapter of the No Ghost Just a Shell saga, Liam Gillick constructs a quiet but uncanny public installation—a space of benches, tables, and shelves—where the 3‑D animated Annlee speaks. She wears a black mourning gown as she addresses the history of her city, the construction of identity, and the tension between half-public, half-private spaces. Paired with ominous clicking sounds and halting breaths, the video evokes a vision of a fragile, haunted subject caught between memory and architecture.

The Legacy of Antonio Lorenzano

Antonio Lorenzano was an acclaimed musician, shamanic healer and craftsman, and the leader of the Warao community of Morichito on the Winikina River, in the lower Orinoco Delta, Venezuela. The film follows anthropologist Dieter Heinen, who knew Lorenzano well, as he returns to Winikina, some six months after Lorenzano's death in November 1996 to pay his respect to his relatives. From the testimonies of his children, grandchildren and others who knew him, it becomes clear that even post-mortem, Lorenzano's view about the proper conduct of Warao cultural practices carry great weight. However the cultural tradition that Lorenzano represented was a hybrid, a fusion of the old with new ideas and practices which he introduced from outside his community.

Southend to Longreach: The Return of the 707

In December 2006 Qantas's very first yet airliner flew into Sydney after a flight of 14,382 nautical miles from Southend on Sea in England. The Boeing 707-138 VHEBA first flew in 1959 and had ended its days in England where it was to be scrapped. A team of retired Qantas engineers led by Peter Elliot decided that the aircraft would fly home again to Australia to be put on display at the Qantas Founders Museum at Longreach Queensland. This was the most complex restoration of a classic airliner ever undertaken involving 15,000 man hours. Over six months period engineers and spare parts were shuttled back and forth between England and Australia. Working in all sorts of weather the engineers finally saw the aircraft fly again for the first time in six years. In Orlando Florida the team were greeted by Hollywood star John Travolta who owns another of Qantas's 707-138s. This is a story about a great aeroplane but also about the dedication and resolve of the people who made her fly again.

To Dance like your Dad

Hetain Patel uses language and physical movement to challenge assumptions about identity. This film shows Patel's father speaking about his work in his coach building factory in Bolton. Patel then restaged it, performing his father's words, accent, mannerisms and movements in an empty studio. Patel is a skilled mimic and physical performer, but this work goes beyond mere imitation. It speaks of family relationships and expectations, different generational opportunities, inheritance, work and labour, the loss of industry and skills and father/son relationships.
