Happy Berry

Happy Berry is the name of a Bangkok boutique run by a group of trendy Thai youths, and is the nerve centre of this fly-on-the-wall documentary (the second in a trilogy entitled "Life and Love"). The camera catches the subjects indulging in all the (post) modern lifestyle trends: drugs, kinky sex, hip-hop, fashion, exhibitionism, narcissism. They are uninhibited, the kind of youth who break down barriers in a supposedly traditional and religious society, but perhaps that's just on the surface. Behind the upbeat tone is a probing examination of values and attitudes in modern youth relationships. Happiness may be deceptive but there's certainly a lot of fun in the Happy Berry.

Middle-earth

A white dream of a gay film maker. Two naked men on a white sofa. Yet it remains in the imagination. Pansittivorakul is the most outspoken gay filmmaker in Thailand. Or in the whole of Southeast Asia, you could say. The fact that last year he received a Silpathorn Award, an official state prize for artists, was one of the few encouraging events in a country with a military regime and unpredictable censorship. The film is an ode to the male body. Two naked men on a white sofa. And a film maker who restrains himself.

To Infinity and Beyond

To infinity and Beyond combines documented footage with fictional narratives. The film consists of two parts made up of the same footage but narrated from two different, yet related, perspectives. The footage captures the activities of villagers in a Thai ceremonial tradition called 'Boon Bung Fai'. The objective of the ceremony, though quite forgotten, is to worship the sky and beg for the rain. The film explores juxtaposition between documentary and fiction; silence and sound; folk tale and modern-day news reporting, as well as relationships between man and nature, earth and sky, dream and reality, east and west, and most importantly, the past and the present that will lead us to the future.

The Class

The Class is a video work in which Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook lectures corpses about death in what seems to be a kind of classroom. It was filmed in an actual hospital morgue in Chiang Mai, with unclaimed dead bodies playing the role of the six "students" in the class. The work is a performance in which the artist tries to understand death by lecturing the dead about death, with the lecture offering various definitions of death from different perspectives. Araya at times talks directly to the cadavers, encouraging them to share their own views and experiences, and communicating with them in the same way she would with living people. This attitude demonstrates her attempt to confront something that society has overlooked as well as social taboos and cultural discrimination, and the religious and cultural values that involve death.

Bangkok Beats: From Pop2Punk

In the capital of Thailand, the music-underground is exploding right now. That is what two German film makers found out during a two-month stay in Bangkok in 2003. The film portrays bands (Beargarden, Apartment Khun Ba, Som etc.) and labels (Smallroom, Bama, Panda, Hualampong Riddim) from the indie-scene, visits festivals and shows (Pattaya, NoisePop) and meets media (Fat Radio, Channel V), who support the Bangkok music scene. In interviews the highly creative protagonists of the local scene express their outlook on music, their conditions and what their work is about in their own words. The intention of making this film is to show to Western people what is going on in Thailand on the cultural side.

The Return

“The Return” is an attempt by the artist to recall his lost memories of his father who died in the car accident in 1991 when the artist was almost five years old. Personal family photographs from his father’s funeral are overlaid with the imagined voice by the artist himself, fictionalising that his dead father is coming back to life—a strange and moving feedback loop between father and son, between photographic documentation and deteriorating memories, between personal history and its own otherness.

Lumphini 2552

"It was shot by a 35mm still camera at Lumphini Park in Bangkok, Thailand, which was named after Lumbini, the birthplace of Buddha. The hand-processed visual shows the organic patterns found in this monumental park, constructing the systematic yet emotional rhythm and pace on the screen, accompanied by the sound from the visual, which was also captured through the still camera on the optical soundtrack area of the 35mm movie format. I am not a Buddhist, but as I grew up in Japan, I am familiar with some of the Buddhist teachings, including the Middle Way, which is a practice to avoid the extremes of the binary oppositions in life. The organic shapes of a leaf is never appears as perfectly straight lines, and I took pictures of leaves to make them appear either horizontal or vertical lines on the screen for a single cartridge of 35mm film (36 exposure for still photography = 3 seconds for the movie format). 2552 is the year on the Buddhist calendar for 2009."
