Fencing Teacher

The great Mark Rakita is rightfully considered the father of the Russian sabre. One of Russia's most decorated fencers, he won his first Olympic gold back in Tokyo in 1964, and the second in Mexico City in 1968. In addition, he is a six-time world champion, a five-time European champion and a three-time USSR champion. Mark Rakita is also a great fencing coach and teacher, and it's not for nothing that he was awarded the title of Honored Coach of the USSR: he trained Olympic champions Viktor Krovopuskov and Mikhail Burtsev, as well as three—time world champion Sergei Koryazhkin. Rakita was feared because he was considered the smartest saber player on the globe and won not at the expense of strength, but at the expense of intelligence. Today Mark Rakita is 87, but he is still in the ranks – he is chairman of the Council of Elders and chairman of the Coaching Council of the Russian Fencing Federation.

Valley of Dreams

Their art and way of life are a mirage of elusive beauty. Here, the legendary past shares a roof with the everyday present. On the verandas of old dachas, samovars still emit their smoke, while through the mist rising from the ravines, it seems as if eyes from the past are peering into our world. And we will follow that gaze—into the workshop of toy-making master Viktor Nazariti, into the village house of artist Maria Dreznina, into the old home of Yuri Macheret and Marina Faidysh, once bought from the Polenovs, into the garden of Irina Starzhenetskaya and Anatoliy Komelin. The artistic dynasties of the Vatagins, Bragovskiys, and Birshteins will open their doors, pouring the energy of creativity onto their canvases, joining us in gazing into the mist rising from the ravines—wondering if, for a fleeting moment, eyes from the past will appear within it.

Returning The Names 2025

Since 2020 organizers of “Returning the Names” have been repeatedly denied authorization. In Moscow, the main public readings are effectively banned, formally due to lingering COVID-era restrictions. In 2022 Russia’s Supreme Court liquidated the International Memorial, and pressure on the memory movement intensified. With mass gatherings impossible, activists seek legal ways to keep the ritual alive. “Returning the Names” is an annual commemoration in which participants read aloud the names of people executed during the Great Terror. Since 2007, thousands have joined across Russia and abroad on the eve of the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression. Traditionally Muscovites gathered at the Solovetsky Stone on Lubyanka Square, opposite the security services’ headquarters. Now the readings scatter across the city, during historical walks or in forests at mass graves. With no publicity, amid fear and the risk of prosecution, dozens take part, and their number keeps growing.
