A young boy commits a simple act of theft that sends his quiet town into a frenzy over the course of one unforgettable summer. The negative physical and psychological effects of anabolic steroids, growth hormones, and masking agents are examined in this European drama which focuses upon the conflict felt by a young runner whose fear of failure exceeds her fear of the drugs. Catherine Delaunay, a 25-year old runner, has just be named French champion after the real winner is disqualified for using drugs. When she suffers a small injury herself she begins using the drugs at the insistence of her German trainer and an unethical sports doctor. Catherine becomes hooked upon her regimen of medication and begins to suffer physical and mental side-effects. To conceal her drug use, Catherine keeps a large supply of "clean" urine. When she really does become drug free, her times suffer. A federation official strongly suggests she get pregnant as they hormones produced by early pregnancy will help her speed.

Gorgeously shot in the wide-open Siberian wilderness this outdoor adventure chronicles the dramatic escape of a big-city bred violinist from a Siberian labor camp. Underlying the action is the tale of a man who learns to become one with his environment rather than trying to dominate it. The story begins as enigmatic, Asian tribesman Toli comforts the starved violinist Dimitri that they will be escaping soon. They get their chance when a beautiful herd of Yakut horses begin grazing placidly near where the two are toiling. Sneaking away from the others, they grab tow hand steeds and race off. Unfortunately, Toli is mortally wounded. Just before he dies, he tells Dimitri that he is a powerful shaman and then hands the fiddler a protective amulet. In this way, Toli becomes Dimitri's guardian spirit. The city youth will need all the help he can get as he and his horse must traverse the unforgiving wilds and keep away from guards, alone.

Sobgui begins a love affair with Madeleine, a German political activist who encourages Sobgui and his friends to return home and fight for change.
