Women of Devil's Island

Italian costume drama about convicted women in France being sent to the penal colony on Devil's Island where they must wade through alligator-infested waters and find gold. Life on the island is tough for these buxom, beautifully-swept coiffed maidens - virtually none who look like they had even the slightest knowledge of crimes worthy of such a punishment. Here, if the girls want to get a day of rest they must work the night with the guards and/or warden of the island, but some changes come when Guy Madison arrives as the new warden out to change the horrible lives led by these playmate-wannabes.

'S Wiesenhendl

The Munich Oktoberfest, the 'Wiesn', is in the eyes of many strangers a fair of oddities, the symbol of an abstruse way of life in general. This is how the author sees this annual hustle and bustle and weaves an equally bizarre event around it, which focuses on the love of a Munich exterminator for the daughter of a Saxon high school teacher. He equips the story with a monstrous inventory of secondary characters, who provide plenty of linguistic and social misunderstandings.

Eine Sommerreise

Documentary with beautiful black-and-white CinemaScope shots, which combined impressive scenes from a trip to the Ukraine with historical reminiscences. The censors criticized the "too narrow and too intimate view" of the Soviet Union; they didn't like the fact that bells were ringing, that a chauffeur from the film crew or an elderly peasant couple recalled the horrors of war or that Nikolai Gogol and Yevgeny Yevtushenko were quoted - that was considered backward-looking. Without the knowledge of the filmmakers Karlheinz Mund and Christian Lehmann, the film was shortened and mutilated; the seventeen minutes that were allowed for a public screening are only the torso of a large draft.

Un clair de Lune à Maubeuge

Paul, a friendly Parisian cab driver, has two loves: music and his fiancée Virginie. One day, while driving customers to the races, he plays a "toquard": Maubeuge, who wins. With his friends, he celebrates the event and, for dessert, composes a song for the occasion: "Tout ça ne vaut pas un clair de lune à Maubeuge". Monique, a secretary at the radio station and one of the guests, had a record made of the tape recording. And this record, following a mistake, was broadcast on a religious music program. It's a runaway success: for Paul, it's fame and fortune. which he had obviously coveted, but more with his symphonies, opera and sonatas. No matter, the "Clair de lune à Maubeuge" (Moonlight in Maubeuge) allows two happily engaged couples to become happily married.

Das schwache Geschlecht muss stärker werden

The weaker sex must become stronger - but how can this be achieved? The central keyword of the six filmmakers Claudia von Alemann, Susanne Beyeler, Erika Runge, Helke Sander, Ula Stöckl and Hanna Laura Klar is: emancipation. Together, they will discuss the importance of films for feminist consciousness-raising and the role of female filmmakers in this process. A statement will be followed by an exemplary feature film scene. Claudia von Alemann talks about the unequal division of housework and advocates the remuneration of this work. How can the relationship between work and family be improved for working women? What about bringing up children? What steps are necessary to overcome the unequal gender order? One thing is clear: Film work is political practice.

Love in Four Dimensions

Young Italian writers and directors express themselves in four episodes about sex and love. "Love and Language," the first tale, centers on the difficulties of a Sicilian immigrant who is unable to master proper Italian. the second tale "Love and Life" centers on a jealous and unhappy wife who becomes so desperate to be free of her constantly philandering husband she takes on a lover of her own. "Love and Art" a nearly exhausted screenwriter hires a secretary to help manage his typing. She's a pretty lass and this makes his insecure wife crazy until he fires the female and hires a male secretary. "Love and Death," the final episode centers on the love affair between a middle-aged widower and the grieving young widow he meets at the cemetery. Unfortuantely for his bank statement, the young, impoverished beauty isn't as bereaved as she seems.
