Non c'è nessuna Dark Side (atto uno 2007-2019)

The maker writes of Non c'è nessuna Dark Side: "I could never say it's a film of mine (maybe not even a film); it's a space of chaos torn from the duration, from our being here to our fear of oblivion." Erik Negro's project started in 2007 as a kind of machine to stop time. What the machine has produced are unstable fragments as the interim phase of a historical and personal process of solidification. Out of the chaos of existence, this UFO has emerged, twelve years later. During this period, cinema and music offered some footholds for a boy from the Italian provinces who had just finished secondary school and was open to life (which among other things regularly brought him to the Rotterdam and Berlin film festivals). The footage was shot (and edited) a long time ago now, back when the film still had a form fixed in advance – over the years, this has been lost.

Unfinished

Languidly lying under the sun, “Incompiuta” is a timeless witness to life happening around it. Its open walls symphonize the feminine voice of the earth, echo the daily chatter about fruit and figs and of the collective consciousness, soul of the world, condensing the vertigo that comes from connecting to the archaic time of our childhood. Simply observing ordinary places and people, an intense and symbolic reading emerges of our fall from paradise reflecting upon the human condition, precarious and painful, on its unbridgeable loneliness, and on its destiny of death.

About Next Horizon

Late at night, pitch black, a car approaches with the lights on. A man walks toward the shore, looking for something. A bunch of illegal immigrants from northern Africa are hiding in the bushes. The man works for the local mobster exploiting the immigrants. They will work at a local mine as modern slaves. Among them is somebody who is not supposed to be there. Sometimes inner conflicts come to the surface. This is the moment to take a look where nobody does, where modern hypocrisy turns other humans into misfits, and not only people from the third world.

The Prince of Ostia Bronx

Dario and Maury, two actors refused from any theatre, academy, and cinema have decided to move to the gay Roman nudist beach of Capocotta. Here, they have set their stage, in a place where people come to feel free and unconstrained by the rules of society. Persevering with their philosophy of ‘failure as a new form of victory’ they have become the Principe (the Prince) and the Contessa (the Countess) of the beach. In 20 years, they have gathered their own loyal audience, staging scenes and creating a long repertoire of amateur little movies where they confess the bitter reality of missing the stage, the one “only the so-called ‘gentlemen’ are allowed to deal with.” With irreverent tones of Pop, Dance and Folk music, this film celebrates failure as a parody, making anybody willing to watch, a Prince or a Countess of the non-victories.

Antologia dei filmati neuropatologici di Camillo Negro e Roberto Omegna

Camillo Negro, professor of neurology at the University of Turin, was a pioneer of "scientific cinematography". Between 1906 and 1918, with the help of his assistant Giuseppe Roasenda, he had some of his patients filmed for educational purposes by Roberto Omegna, one of the major Italian operators. During the war years he continued his scientific cinematography project at the Turin Military Hospital, documenting war syndromes in soldiers.

Reencuentro

The film comes from the manipulation of 35mm film material, of old very different movie trailers each other. During the making of the film it showed the need to intervene with pictorial elements and perforations for enhanced images in sequence. With an assembly were cut and reassembled on movie film pieces that have given rise to a sort of "dream epiphany" of pre-existing material. The narration is defined by an "internal gestures" that is contextually develops to become music.

Victory Over the Sun, or, Spaghetti Western Unlike You & Me

Victory Over the Sun, or, Spaghetti Western Unlike You & Me was shot in a former cinema, built in the late 1950s in a small town overlooking the Gulf of St Euphemia in southern Italy. Malone constructs a kind of portrait of the cinema that reveals both its former elegance and international Modernity, alongside its current obsolescence and perhaps equally beautiful dilapidation. A narrative is ambiguously laid over the images in the form of a voiceover telling the story of an unusual percussion instrument designed by Russian avant-garde composer Galina Ustvolskaya.
