Chinese Checkers

The film takes the sprawling form of a Chinese checkers games, creating a collage of associations evoked by movements and gambles. Through one family, three different Germanys take shape, including their problematic subchapters. The film centres on the mother who is a passionate Chinese checkers player as well as a tailor and fashion designer in the GDR. Éléments 2

A plunge into the Mediterranean Sea, a body that connects and divides us, an elemental force of creation and of death. At a time of care-free relaxation by the sea, in the same waters, a bit farther off, intense dramas unfold, as they have, increasingly, over the last decade. Between empathy, indifference and powerlessness, a desire to make a purifying gesture arises—one which might appear egotistical in face such enormous suffering. A collection of positive and negative images that seeks no new dialectic, set discourse, dichotomy, or separation, but looks to establish connections, links and possibilities.

Fantasmes et fantômes

Three dreams, three stories that explore the charms and dangers of the imagination... In a small café, around 1900, a provincial theater enthusiast recounts his supposed successes to anyone who will listen. In an isolated house in the countryside, two women watch night fall and gradually succumb to terror. In the heart of a psychiatric clinic (with reputedly modern methods), the madmen may not be who we think they are—and they end up turning appearances upside down. Based on plays by Georges Courteline and André de Lorde.

The Third Option

„It used to be down to fate whether you gave birth to a disabled child. Today you can choose if you want to keep it or not.“ The results of prenatal screening can present would-be parents with a very difficult dilemma. Should a physically or mentally disabled child be allowed to live – or not be brought into the world at all? Who gets to decide what is normal and worthy of life? The filmic essay DIE DRITTE OPTION puts a new perspective on a highly controversial topic: while we listen to the statements of doctors, those who carry out prenatal screenings and the disturbing experiences of the couples affected, the visual level places the topic in a much wider socio-political context. Director Thomas Fürhapter’s debut film offers fascinating visual and acoustic impressions that tackle the core questions of birth, death, ethics and questions how far we should go when it comes to optimising our lives.

The Other Fields

Every summer, when the major football teams fly their star athletes to training grounds in expensive and sunny locations, some other players meet on a football field in Duisburg. Even though there are professional footballers, they are all unemployed. And they look desperately for a job. "The Other Fields" sheds a new and completely different light on the mythologies of contemporary football. While some may think that “bling-bling” and “glitz” is all there is to modern football, Marco Kugel’s and Simon Quack’s film shows the intricate economic and moral complexities behind the façade of entertainment. Dreams only last a season or two.

Survival Signs

Survival Signs deals with the problem of language as an organ of taste, cause of the loss of paradise and instrument of language. It leased men to build the Tower of Babel to reach heaven and surpass God, after which God punished them by destroying their unity. By using electronic language, echographical and televised images, Survival Signs dismantles the loss of the power of understanding and communication of language. As an example, the video presents the fight for survival or Iraqi children deprived of food - a way of cutting off their tongues. And what forbidden fruit had they tasted? What language would we like them to speak? That of having or that or being? Or, do we simply hope that they die without uttering a word?
