Auf der Suche nach dem Glück

Our own 20-minute film documentary accompanied the public relations work of the HIB ("Homosexual Interest Group Berlin") from 1977 onwards, for example at a GDR-wide lesbian meeting in East Berlin in 1978. In the HIB there was a cameraman with his Super8 camera, a recently graduated television director, a script team, an actor, someone to carry the camera tripod and the will to capture our work on film (Peter Rausch). From 1973 to 1979, the "Homosexual Interest Group Berlin" (HIB) operated in the capital of the GDR. Its core objective was to create a counseling and communication center for queer GDR citizens (the term "queer" was not yet a term of the new emancipation movement at the time, but it did form the basis of the HIB's work). Film clips in Super 8 format soon became part of the HIB's presentation. At the time, Bodo Amelang had compiled further clips as independent small film contributions in a "kaleidoscope".

Profiteers of Fear

A certain degree of influence by the pharmaceutical industry on politics and authorities would not be surprising. The examples of large pharmaceutical companies directly influencing political decision-makers, ministries and authorities are too blatant. And thus decisions were made in favor of the industry. Paid specialists, bought-in experts, influenced politicians - independent decisions do not seem to be a matter of course in the healthcare system. "Profiteers of Fear" sheds light on the entanglements between politics and business.

Alle Gefühle glauben an einen glücklichen Ausgang

A study of Alexander Kluge that also emulates his technique of seeking and linking. Kluge reads aloud, Kluge recounts, including stories from his childhood and youth, from the bombing of Halberstadt, his home town. “What you don’t understand as a child you will contemplate for the rest of your life.” Kluge does this as the author of films, books, TV programs. He has always had several professions at once. He is a legal advisor, director, author, founder of the television production company DCTP, and person in charge of its culture magazines. But if you think that these are all different jobs, you’re mistaken.

Humperdinck: Hänsel und Gretel

Johannes Felsenstein’s production of HANSEL AND GRETEL presents it with every sinister element removed. The children remain in a home setting with their own bed central to the scene and the barest hint of a forest behind, while their father plays the witch as an amiable, totally benevolent figure, not sinister at all, even joining them in the final joyful ensemble. When they sing that the witch is dead, you find that the production contradicts that completely. Taking that unsinister stance means that the opera loses much of its bite. No doubt Felsenstein felt that it would make the piece more accessible for very young children, though many of them relish the sinister element. That said, it is a strong and capable performance, very well conducted and with a cast of good if not outstanding singers. One wonders what Felsenstein meant to convey, just as it is not clear why the central characters should regularly be carrying dolls. A highly individual version of a much-loved opera.

Allermöhe Film #6

From the neighborhood to the suburbs. The Steffen family moves from a rental apartment in St. Pauli to their own home in Allermöhe. Farewell to the alternative scene, the billiard salon, the dance club nights, a certain idea of the city. “Some still do the same as 10 years ago, have only become 10 years older.” Site inspection. Topping-out. Where does the kitchen block go? Feng-Shui-like everything is balanced. Moving into the new house. “You have to stay supple ... Tomorrow the baseboards are coming. "
