Margherita

Sister Margherita is a young Benedictine nun living in the 19th century in an Italian monastery. She had the opportunity to see and touch Jesus Christ and she is in love with him, but for some reason he decided to disappear living her in a mood of anguish and despair. This love for God and the desperate attempt to have him back leads her to a self-destructing behavior: she lays in dirty places surrounded by rats, she whips her back and scream and so on. Her friend, sister Chiara, suggests her to stop behaving like that, to calm down and try to look for God in the harmony of Nature. Sister Margherita accepts her advice and she spent some time in the woods: after a nap she starts hearing scary voices, then she reach a lake and she understand that God himself is calling her.

J'ai comme reculé, on dirait

A filmmaker and her entourage. Three young women filled with ambition, exhilarated by countless possibilities. Yet disenchantment sets in. Through careers that are slow to take off, boring jobs, debaucheries that become commonplace, break-ups, the desire to escape and the search for happiness at all costs, a kind of state of affairs emerges. Shot between Montreal and Berlin, vacillating between intimate portrait and impressionistic self-portrait, J'AI COMME RECULÉ, ON DIRAIT captures the daily lives of its characters with a raw, immediate aesthetic and a self-deprecating sense of humor.

The Fruit is There to be Eaten

The Fruit is There To Be Eaten is based on the 1947 film Black Narcissus, by British directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger., set in India. The work echoes the style of the source material in that it is set in India, but replaces painted backdrops with back projection, stock footage and revealed sets to reimagine the relationship between lower-caste dancing girl Kanchi and missionary nun Sister Clodagh. In a schoolroom and in the gardens of a Himalayan convent, Kanchi and Clodagh recognise they are trapped in a film set in 2016. With the colonies a distant memory, Clodagh has lost her role as sister superior. This allows Kanchi to introduce her gods in order to challenge an imposed belief system, and in so doing to break down the civility of the colonies into something more carnal.

Le fort des fous

Departing from material records of the early colonial “scientific expeditions” and “taming campaigns” led by the French colonizers in North Africa, the story follows a community of young nomads and wanderers as they form an imagined utopian society. Reenactments, improvisations, and interviews performed and conducted with the inhabitants of Algiers, Kythira Island, and the Prosfygika community in Athens inform this work as instances of alternative temporality and autonomous space.

Concerned Travelers

Concerned Travelers is set on Lesbos during the last weeks before the EU-Turkey agreement came into effect in early 2016. One Million people reached Europe by sea in 2015 and almost half of them arrived on the beaches of Lesbos. The film follows migrants who arrive on Lesbos, before they move with a ferry to the Greek mainland and continue to travel north to central Europe. With the influx of migrants on the Greek Island, tourism came to a sudden halt and changed the livelihood of many islanders profoundly. Tourists who discuss their concerns in online travel forums regarding the crisis create the tone for this short documentary narrated by an omniscient observer. Concerned Travelers is shot in non-interventional, observational direct cinema style.
