1903: Relived: Stage 1 Of The First Tour

On the 19th of July 1903 60 cyclists left Paris for the maiden stage of the very first Tour de France, racing 467km through the night to the line in Lyon. 116 years later, two modern-day riders attempted to recreate the feat of endurance using bikes and equipment from the early 20th century to fully experience the highs and lows of the early Tour pioneers. Endurance cyclist Mark Beaumont and GCN presenter James Lowsley-Williams are pushed to the limits of their physical and mental ability, struggling with the midsummer heat, bikes borrowed from museums and a lack of sleep. How did they compare to the Tour’s first heroes?

Cripple

Developing redaction techniques from previous works and taking the form of cut-up poetry and assemblage, "Cripple" explores the idea of idleness in the context of the reality of how disabled people have been pushed further to the margins of society due to austerity. From the outside it may seem like they are lazy or idle and not deserving of help. However without support they are deprived of the human right to enable them to be part of society. Cripplewas commissioned by Phoenix as part of Idle Index, which invites artists to create screensaver works. The work uses several passages from Frances Ryan’s "Crippled" (2019, Verso Books).

The Sleeping Beauty

It’s almost a habit. I take a story from Perrault that I love so, I put it in the blender of my dreams, and flies the stage to the lands of childhood, the ones I prefer, as well as to adulthood, also in me, to be honest. From "The Sleeping Beauty" there remains a lot, the wood, the spindle, the 100-year sleep, the fairies, good ones and evil ones, and obviously a prince who moves. But also the cauldron filled with snakes, and the very evil ogress. To be clear the title often makes us forget that the kiss that wakes from the magical sleep is but only the start of the tale. The worst, the very worst, is to come, since the Queen, mother of Prince Charming, is nothing less than an ogress who dreams only to devour everyone, but firstly her daughter-in-law and grandkids, which, evidently, is only seen in stories, she dreams only to take her son as husband to create little ogres. Long story short, a very nice momma. She'll end up in her cauldron, like in the story…

Sewers of Paris - The Hidden City

While Paris, the City of Lights, shines brightly, hidden in its shadows are fascinating installations, put in place nearly two centuries ago: the sewers. Even today, this 2,600-kilometer-long labyrinth of streets and infrastructure ensures the sanitation of the entire capital. In 1854, during Haussmann's grand urban renewal projects in Paris, the French engineer Eugène Belgrand undertook one of the century's largest construction projects: the renovation of the Paris sewers. His main innovation: an ingenious dual network that simultaneously treats wastewater and delivers drinking water to Parisians.
