1999 release

Born in 1964, graduated from Tama Art University with a degree in art. During his college years, he formed an indie band with his classmates and performed for several years before studying under Sakumi Hagiwara and beginning to make films. In his early works, he created numerous pieces using a structural style that manipulated light, objects, and even the film itself through frame-by-frame editing. Eventually, his works began to incorporate narrative elements and shifted toward analyzing his own inner world. In 1994, the premiere screening of "Cat Ears" (1994) at the East Gallery in Ebisu achieved record attendance. Additionally, he has collaborated with performance units and directed the video opera "Satyricon" (2004), consistently exploring boundary-crossing visual expressions.

Jōtarō Fukuhara, known as ‘Joe’, is a ‘locksmith’ who poses as a vagrant to steal corporate secrets and expose wrongdoing. In reality, he is the heir to the Person Group. Showa 38. In those days when golden badges gleamed on lapels, the Shoryu-kai reigned in the east and the Akutsu Federation in the west. Positioned between them was the old-school Yoshida-ikka, which fell victim to a surprise attack by the Shoryu-kai that disregarded the code of honour. Witnessing this, the Akutsu Federation sent Katsuragi (Hitoshi Ozawa), assistant underboss of the Hyodo-gumi, to try to bring the Yoshida-ikka under their umbrella first. Takayama (Ken Tanaka), the second-in-command of the Yoshida Family, could not bring himself to agree to a 4:6 split, even though the proposal came from his sworn brother, Katsuragi. Meanwhile, Ōba, the second-in-command of the Hyōdō-gumi, attacked the Yoshida Family to prevent Katsuragi from taking the credit. With his boss murdered, Takayama, a long dagger in hand, quietly rises to face the challenge alone…!

This film was shot in an ruined house that once stood in Shibuya Udagawa-cho, Tokyo. The block where the house located was a redevelopment area. Shibuya, known as one of Tokyo's most popular bustling street, has an area where old building are still clustered together, and the surrounding area has become like a ghost town. "Plants retreat when people set foot in the area, on the other hand, they multiply as soon as people are gone." (Hiroyuki Sekine)

The Air-Conditioning System (1997) introduces us to a young man in his flat, and the ways of communication with his girlfriend. The sky is blue and skirts are put on the balcony for drying. The wind will carry everything away, just like the noise and music or the porn we watch with him later on TV (he prefers to look at western blonde women). What will happen when the young woman in her flat will have found out soon that he is looking at her (and listening to her) via the air-conditioning system?

Haruko, a girl with psychic powers who can communicate with inorganic matter, wakes up one morning to the call of someone, and as she is invited, she arrives at an abandoned apartment building from the 30s of the Showa era, where countless "mononoke" have lived.

Our dreams will come true if we believe in them. This original film is basically about how easily we can fly, as told by a young girl in an Osaka dialect.

This animated film is comprised of five themes chosen from Tezuka Osamu's collection of essays "Essay in Idleness of Insects" in which he had compiled studies on insects. Although this collection contains mainly academic studies, it also includes records of insect observation that lead to literary conclusions with mysterious or mythical imagery. The five essays are done in different animation techniques, and each episode is followed by a scene with the boy Tezuka Osamu and a swallow-tailed butterfly called "Oomurasaki." The film depicts the boy Tezuka Osamu desperately chasing Oomurasaki with his butterfly net, together with what he saw in his dreams. This work was screened at the show "Tezuka Osamu: Images of the Past and Future".

This documentary is about Rinshō Kadekaru, a Japanese-Okinawan singer who was known as a representative Okinawan folk, shimauta, singer of the post-war era.

Sho Watanabe, 77, has worked as a lighting technician for many years, longing to work in the film industry. However, when his wife, Tomiko, suddenly developed Alzheimer's disease, he took a video and 16mm camera and began documenting her and the people around her. This film is the result of compiling and editing the vast amount of film he had accumulated in this way.

The old days of the yakuza are over,” the boss decides, and the gang is dissolved. The henchmen, who became yakuza because they fell in love with their boss, cannot call anyone else “father” anymore, so they start working in a new line of work they are not used to... The main character, Hiroshi, is played by Ryuji Harada. He plays the role of a single-minded and reckless yakuza with sincerity, breaking new ground. Sho Aikawa plays the older brother, Ishikawa. He gives a good performance as a hard-headed and clumsy ex-cop yakuza. The cast also includes Tatsuo Umemiya, Masaru Shiga, Kaori Sakaue, and a variety of others, completing a passionate drama about the life of a man who falls in love with a man and risks his life for him.

A woman is crying and falling, torn apart by the lightning of masochism.

From the moment the man notices it, he begins to listen closely to every sound around him, closes himself off from all interests, and gradually becomes absorbed by the stain.

Inspired by British director Mike Leigh's 'Secrets and Lies', the film was shot using a script with "no dialogue, only scene breaks", believing that "just by seeing two people in a situation, you can understand the situation and the feelings of the characters, rather than trying to explain them in a bad way". The actors were given only the events and situations and asked to move freely in the rest of the film. The actors did not try to speak excessively but instead tried to convey the psychology of the moment by performing everyday actions such as eating, washing the bowl, cleaning and sleeping in a restrained tone, and they succeeded well. The fixed-point cameras in several locations inside the house also play a major role in carefully following the small changes that occur in real life.

It's the Obon holiday. The city has forgotten the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and only the cicadas echo in the streets. The men in yellow helmets, Kagawa and his senior, Saito, arrive. We're the only ones working now, aren't we? The conversation between the two part-timers at the gardener's shop is always in a deadlock. But no matter how much they curse each other, they can't be separated forever. Because he is a ground-bound spirit. They have no choice but to live alone in the city. In the treetop of a big tree, Kagawa's arm, dripping with fresh blood, sways in the wind. In an empty landscape that could be anywhere in Japan, the sad emptiness of people whose existence has been forgotten hangs in the air... Neither horror nor comedy, this is a new genre of splatter labour movie.

Shizuka recorded live at Manda-la2, Tokyo on November 8, 1993, and at Studio AMS on August 12, 1994.

Each person lives a different life, but the hand seemed to be a metaphor for that person's life. In other words, I thought that the life of the person would be determined by what he had. I pick up a fountain pen and stuff the film by hand. This tells my life. I made such a thought into a work.

Centers on a support group for alcoholics and their families

In the summer of 1999, in a mountain gorge town in Yamanashi prefecture, I was holding a movie camera Bolex loaded with 16mm film.

In A Hundred Sweethearts, these worries spread to include the people and things around the filmmaker, as she presents herself as a slightly spoiled but unconceited youth who is used to having others care for her. It is both the comfort of this emotional security and the realization, as she becomes an adult, that it will not last that prompt Utagawa to record these events, seek out past ones in old home movies, and even re-enact them in the present. More than an affirmation of identity, film becomes for her a celluloid blanket, a warm set of images to which she must sweetly but sadly say goodbye as time marches inevitably on. - Aaron Gerow

Yumi, is a freelance nurse working a temporary contract to help a local doctor. Filled with hope, she visits the doctor, but what she sees there is the gruesome sight of the previous nurse, Kaori, drugged and abused by the doctor every night! "Could it be me next?!" Yumi hides in a hospital room late at night to catch the perpetrators in the act. But the one who appears is Mamoru, the man she abandoned years ago. "You said pretty things about becoming a nurse, but I'll show you just how slutty you are..." As the needle plunges into Yumi's arm as she desperately resists, the angel in white falls to the depths of a lustful beast..
