Peter Fleischmann observed Kimmel between 1970 and 1987, interviewing acquaintances, police officers and repeatedly Kimmel himself, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1985 for the murder of a police officer. The grand design of the long-term observation of a human life itself contributes to the creation of legends and is criminologically and psychologically unfounded.

Writer-director Saura manages to draw several parallels between the religious persecution of the 1700s and the political despotism of Fascist Spain.

Without the benefit of interviews or analyses of what is passing before one's eyes on the screen, the parade of Japanese scenes seems to take place at some distance -- making the viewer a definite outsider with no friendly interpreter to ground his or her perspective.
