Black and White - Malayan Tapir

Black and White – Malayan Tapir, hopes to apply an encyclopedic narrative style to deal with the equality between people and non-humans, man and nature, and to explore the changes in the way modern people view images. The scenes switch from the National Gallery Singapore, the National History Museum, Singapore Zoo to search engines and multiple windows. The political relationship between the history of the zoo in Southeast Asia and the colonial era leads to the drawing of a scientific illustration, biology, civil division and the local legend of Malayan tapir.

Striking Back

With his complexly plotted feature-film debut, shot entirely in widescreen black and white, Taiwanese director Fu Shan-Fong has created an often hilarious satire of filmmaking in Taiwan and a parody of cinema cliches resulting from the attempts of a group of hot young advertising executives to make a major motion picture. Each of the would-be filmmakers tends to make commercials that pay tribute to their favorite movie directors (who range from Ingmar Bergman to John Woo), and all are eager to realize their dream of making an art film. At first, the group faces so many obstacles the director kills himself in despair. Shortly thereafter they find a backer who unfortunately insists they make a Hollywood-style action thriller about Mafia arms smugglers called "Striking Back." Scenes from the investor's dream movie periodically appear throughout the story, and Shan-Fong uses them to parody Asian cinema's tendency to imitate and elaborate upon Western movie conventions.

Ling Chi Kao

Chen Chieh-jen’s Lingchi Echoes calmly yet forcefully condemns the many forms of Western colonial domination Taiwan has endured. Its images feel like dream-images from collective memory, buried in the viewer’s unconscious and demanding a response. Projected across three screens at a slow, poetic pace, the work connects historical violence to contemporary Taiwanese society. Hovering between madness, agony, and ecstatic transcendence, the imagery turns viewing into an unsettling confrontation. Though based on a once-obscure historical document, its reenactment of lingchi in the twenty-first century feels like looking at images of hell. Loaded with colonial, historical, cinematic, punitive, and aesthetic meanings, the slowed image compels the viewer to stare—at history, at violence, and at the self. Lingchi becomes a metaphor for First World power over the vulnerable under globalization.
