Head, Heart and Soul

Six university professors of math and physics wanted to share the beauty of their research. They organize a competition with the hope of inspiring artists to create ground breaking pieces, based on modern science. A jury of six experts in art, fashion and architecture were invited to judge the results. One may think, that in contrast to mathematical beauty, artistic beauty can be appreciated without a complete understanding. Unexpectedly, mathematical rigor is replaced by artistic rigor; the overconfidence of scientists in the beauty of their research clashes with the modern artists world view.

Blind Cinema

An unusual group sets sail from St. Petersburg to Finland. The crew, which consists of vision-impaired people and people with normal eyesight, learns to work together in order to successfully complete their undertaking. The observational documentary shows the crew’s first contact with the boat, which is done by touch, and then follows their daily routine while at sea. The disinterested camera records a reality that overcomes our prejudices regarding the helplessness of blind people. The problem-free journey gives the sailors space for new sensations. Excerpts from the ship’s log show us aspects of the mission – i.e., the transformation of oneself that can change the world.

Harakiri

A young frustrated poet moves into an old communal apartment in Saint Petersburg. Incompetence leads him to the constant contemplation of a suicide and anticipation of a post-mortem fame. However, the apartment he’s settled in is not suitable for meeting one’s end because of the lack of hot water. It doesn’t bother the tenants since they’re too afraid of a mysthical ‘Babay’ (Boogeyman) allegedly killing everyone who dares to fix it. The protagonist refuses to accept these terms and challenges Babay confonting him in his own room.

During this game of death and burial, there is no place for genuine grief. But when things are going awry in the non-holiday life of a Russian village, it is very difficult not to cry.

Sunday of the Prodigal Son

Lent is one of the most important events in the life of an Orthodox person. The film tells about the quest, doubts, extremes and experiences of a young man who chose a difficult path of abstinence not only from many worldly goods, but also from all thoughts that contradict his own picture of the world, based on religious dogmas. On his way, he encounters, it would seem, everyday and ordinary questions for a modern person, nevertheless, which do not fit his world outlook. Leaving efforts to resist to all that in his opinion "it is impossible, not arbitrary," he tries to get used to, to accept, to reach a balance with the world in which he lives.
