A land full of cliffs, streams, dotted with lakes and peat bogs, buffeted by strong sea winds... One of the most fascinating countries in Europe, but above all, one of the most mysterious. An island at the mercy of the sea winds, washed by the Atlantic and the waters of the Celtic and Irish seas. The island's beauty can be found in its rugged coastline, dramatic cliffs, streams, lakes and peat bogs. But above all, Ireland is a country full of spectacular stories. Its Celtic myths and legends have shaped its culture and our imagination. An air of mystery still hovers over the country of over 70,000 square kilometres. This is reflected in traditions, beliefs, folk music. This is also the legacy of thousands of years of history in an extraordinary land where, according to legend, giants and fairies still hide in the rocks and caves.

Stage director Frank Castorf “might have been born to direct From the House of the Dead” (Opera Today). His gritty, visually striking adaptation brings bold modern and postmodern touches to Janáček’s masterwork without ever overshadowing the intense forward momentum of the music, conducted to dramatic perfection by Simone Young and sung by an all-star cast in Munich. Janáček adapted Dostoevsky for this powerfully compelling opera set in a Siberian prison camp, full of starkly contrasting moods and motifs, unusual in its episodic structure. The last opera Janáček ever composed, its third act was on his desk when he died in 1928; attempts by his students to “complete” his orchestration have largely fallen away over the decades in favor of the original version. Despite the grimness of the setting and the brutality of several characters, the composer’s compassion shines through in tender moments, movingly illustrating his motto for the work: “in every creature, a spark of God.”

This work arises from the random encounter of two titles having a tie in the 50th place on the Sight & Sound list in 2012, curiously enough, when considering a dialogue between these two films, we see how cinema can generate its own ghosts: in both films the dead and the living coexist; in La Jeteé thanks to time (insubordinate of movement) and in Ugetsu Monogatari thanks to movement (a panoramic view within a sequence shot, which refers to a deceptive narrative continuity). What would happen if we stripped both films of their construction?

By inviting members of the West African diaspora in London to comment on portraits from a collection of colonial ethnographic photographs taken in West Africa between 1909 and 1915, the film highlights the plurality of contemporary perspectives on these images. Some discern the imprint of colonial violence, while others perceive signs of optimism, resilience, or unexpected forms of identification, thus complicating any single interpretation of these photographs.

Three short films, out of the ordinary, brought together under a bewitching and enticing title. They are After School Knife Fight by the duo Poggi/Vinel, Les Îles by Gonzales, and Ultra Pulpe by Mandico. Three atmospheres, three sensitivities, going through three forms of expression (music, theatre and cinema) and which, put end-to-end, create an alternative pathway towards borrowed worlds of romance first, then obsession, and in the end, possession. Worlds of soft naivety, of nightmarish creatures and of pop fantasy, reminding us of the mysterious and velvety snatches of our dreams that stick to the spirit when one leaves them.

Une greffe pour la vie
Between 1947 and 1949 the photographer based in the Canary Islands Bonifacio Hernández Gil made numerous photographs for the army and the colonial administration of the so-called Spanish West Africa. In his images appear new cities as scenes of science fiction movies, surrounded by the desert and half-empty, prepared to welcome the new man that the regime designed. Impossible cities that the film says from the present in the only possible way, as Calvino wrote: from the relations between the measurements of its space and the events of its past.

Intertwining the stories of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's creation with the true story of Eva Peron, she celebrates the extraordinary show in the 40th year after its creation. Meeting musical stars including Elaine Paige, Hal Prince and Tim Rice, she hears how the show came into being, all inspired by a face on a postage stamp. She then travels to Argentina, meeting politicians, performers and Eva fans to hear how this intensely divisive figure - loved by the poor, loathed by the rich - became one of the enduring icons of our time.

Squaddies on the Frontline tells the story of the British Army's experience of the Northern Ireland conflict through the eyes of the ordinary men and women that soldiered here. For almost 40 years between 1969 and 2007, a total of over a quarter-of-a-million soldiers served on the streets of Northern Ireland in 'Operation Banner', the British Army's longest ever operation.
