A Callgirl for Ghosts

The film is part of Lemkes never-ending Munich series, but this time it leads beyond Schwabing or Maxvorstadt, which makes it more entertaining than its predecessors. After a stop at the Bayrischer Hof, it moves into the Glockenbachviertel, over the Reichenbachbrücke to the Isar, further into the suburbs. These places are not alien to residents of Munich or tourists, but Lemke knows no tour guide romance. He has the usual group of main characters, two or three girls, a young man, and sends them off as if on a great expedition. They bring along the Lemkestyle, which doesn't fit in anywhere, but works like a contrast medium. Their fantasy figures make the reality around them more real.

Leni Riefenstahl - The End of a Myth

Countless people around the world know the pictures from Leni Riefenstahl's films, even if they have not seen them in their entirety. The work of the German director has burned itself into the collective memory. Even decades after the end of the Nazi era, she showed no remorse and presented herself as an apolitical, naive follower of the Nazi criminal regime. Her artistic service for the cinema was always recognized. But book author Nina Gladitz shows after decades of research that Hitler's favorite filmmaker was not only a follower, but also a perpetrator during the Third Reich, who instrumentalized other filmmakers such as the brilliant cinematographer Willy Zielke in order to gain fame for herself.

The Fever

Malaria has killed more people than all other diseases and wars on Earth combined. In Subsaharan Africa, one child still dies every 60 seconds. Nobody, including Big Pharma, the Gates Foundation, or the WHO, seems to believe that Africans have their own solutions. Director Katharina Weingartner takes us to an area that she calls the “ground zero” of malaria: the countries around the Lake Victoria basin in East Africa. In Uganda and Kenya, she found people who have taken action against malaria using local strategies. The Fever portrays the fight against malaria in East Africa as a case study in greed and courage.

Schocken, on the Verge of Consensus

Salman Schocken was the King of department stores in Germany. Before WWII, he owned 22 department stores with 6,000 employees. He possessed a unique collection of 60,000 rare books in German and Hebrew and founded a modern, Jewish publishing house. He was the lifelong supporter of Shmuel Yosef Agnon and he owned the Haaretz newspaper which still survives on the border of consensus. He supported secular, Jewish culture and identified with humanist, liberal Judaism, a relic of 19th century Europe. Today, in an age of unscrupulous market economy and militant Judaism, Salman Schocken’s ways point to an alternative, perhaps not entirely lost.

Labour in a Single Shot

A few years ago, German artists Antje Ehmann and Harun Farocki conducted workshops on the subject of work in 15 cities around the world. The result was the creation of 400 short films depicting various faces of work in the modern world. Now Antje Ehmann and architect Luis Feduchi have returned to the project, this time with filmmakers from Warsaw and Berlin. Will the films made be able to show how the pandemic influenced work and professional reality? Can all the changes occurring be captured in the form of an image? Will the movies themselves change? The German title of the project "Eine Einstellung zur Arbeit" has a double meaning: it means working in one film take and at the same time an attitude towards work.

During a scientific pre-study, by chance, he made the first record of a wildcat in an area near his hometown Jena. Thereupon he dedicates a whole year to get the genetic evidence and a really splendid film recording of a free-living wildcat. For this reason he sets up trail cameras and lure sticks. To find out more about these animals he meets up with two interview partners in course of the film. The Thuringian wildcat expert Silvester Tamás answers questions regarding estimates on the stock of free-ranging wildcats and the protection of the species. Matthias Krüger is head-taxidermist at the Jena Phyletic Museum and explains what we can learn from wildcats found already dead.

Cockroach

In February 2019, the Hong Kong government proposed a bill that would have allowed the extradition of criminal suspects from Hong Kong to face trial in mainland China. The controversial bill sparked immediate outrage over widespread fear of arbitrary detention and politically motivated trials that would decimate Hong Kong’s autonomy under ‘one country, two systems.’ Protests escalated into epic pro-democracy demonstrations, in part led by young people connected via social media. COCKROACH, filmed during the height of the protests, captures the extraordinary intensity of an unprecedented era in Hong Kong’s history.
