Rebel Women: The Great Art Fightback

Documentary about the generation of female artists who - having emerged out of the tumult and fervour of the late 1960s - aimed to reinvent the arena of art and radically change the way women were perceived. On both sides of the Atlantic, women were using experimental new mediums and questioning everything - from the way women were presented in magazines to their right to equal pay. Mary Kelly caused outrage in the tabloids by displaying dirty nappies at the ICA, Margaret Harrison's depiction of Hugh Hefner as a bunny girl resulted in her exhibition being shut down by the police, and in Los Angeles Judy Chicago told her students to only study work by women. The programme tells the story of these revolutionary artists.

L'Incoronazione di Poppea

A ruthless dictator falls in love with a sexy woman. Together, they get rid of every obstacle in their way: his wife, her former lover, and also the voice of reason. Everything is sacrificed to passion, in this tale where evil triumphs, virtue and reason are humiliated, and nothing corresponds to our moral principles. Jan Lauwers, the director and choreographer, sets L'incoronazione di Poppea in a way congenial to his means: a visual artist, he translated the emotions expressed by Monteverdi’s music into dancing and visual images. The result was mixed; the general impression was one of many ideas, seemingly not fully developed or analysed. The stage was constantly cluttered with moving bodies, or tableau vivants, leaving a sense of confusion, and distracting from the music.

Game On... Clothes Off

You haven’t played an RPG until you’ve played with the gamer girls. Whether online or on a table with their friends (old-school style), these ladies know how to get into the fantasy. Be they tavern wenches, buxom barbarians, forest nymphs, or leather-clad elven assassins, these ladies really do what it takes to get in character - because what happens in game, stays in game. Enter Judy: a longtime player who has recently joined her husband’s table game. But soon enough, Judy is shocked to realize the game is a thinly veiled excuse for an RPG orgy, and she leaves him to start a game of her own. Of course, her campaign quickly devolves into a lusty quagmire of swords and sorcery, but this time she’s the Dungeon Master! So if you’re looking for elves who touch themselves, breasts in your quests, and jizz on your wizards, this movie scores a critical hit. So enter a realm where the dwarves aren’t the only ones digging tunnels!

Luxury

In New York (and other cities all over the world) LUXURY apartment buildings are going up everywhere. For one year, filmmaker Todd Verow documented several buildings. The finished film, with a haunting soundtrack by the filmmaker, offers a non-narrative mediation on the meaningless of the word LUXURY which is used to describe basic shelter. When everything is LUXURY then nothing is LUXURY. As the gap between the haves and the have-nots becomes a black hole sized chasm there is only LUXURY or the streets, nothing in between.
