Swarm

Swarm works with the image of a buzzing crater formed by young male bodies twisting into a common mass — erasing the personal. It is similar to battlefield rituals: inspired by one youtube video in which volunteers from Ural (War in Donbass) performed the dance of death I recreated the rhythm of military ritual saturated with sensе of suspense and horror. While creating this video, I raised an issue of the legitimacy of compulsory military service through which the government persuades young men to get involved in its military operations.

Heliades

In Greek mythology, the Heliades ("children of the sun") were the daughters of Helios and Clymene the Oceanid. Their brother, Phaëthon, died after attempting to drive his father's chariot (the sun) across the sky. He was unable to control the horses and fell to his death (according to most accounts, Zeus struck his chariot with a thunderbolt to save the Earth from being set afire). The Heliades grieved for four months and the gods turned them into poplar trees and their tears into amber. According to some sources, their tears (amber) fell into the river Eridanos, in which Phaethon had fallen. According to Hyginus, the Heliades were turned to poplar trees because they yoked the chariot for their brother without their father Helios' permission.

Tchaïkovski: Pique Dame

Russian literature is inconceivable without Pushkin. It draws its sustenance from Pushkin; it breathes Pushkin. During his brief 38-year life, he produced a torrent of some of the most wonderful poems, plays and stories. Pushkin wrote the short story The Queen of Spades in 1833, in the space of a few days and ‘in a cold fury’: a brief text, with strong accents and a focus on psychology. More than 50 years later, Tchaïkovski drew inspiration from this story to compose an opera. For the 2018 Salzburg Festival, Mariss Jansons conducts the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and Hans Neuenfels directs Tchaïkovski’s ‘The Queen of Spades’ at the Großes Festspielhaus. Hanna Schwarz plays the Countess. Evgenia Muraveva sings the role of Lisa, Brandon Jovanovich is Herman, Vladislav Sulimsky plays Count Tomsky / Plutus, and Igor Golovatenko is Prince Yelezky.

Girls are Flying

The story of one summer of several high school students from an average school of an average town in the heart of Russia. The heroes of the film are classmates of the very girls whose double suicide - a jump from the roof of a high-rise building - shocked the country a couple of years ago and provoked a wave of teenage suicides. Who are they? Which ones? Do you need someone other than yourself? What do we know about their loneliness? And what, in fact, lies behind the statistics of teenage suicides, according to which Russia ranks first in Europe. Six stories that happened in one summer: a house, a dacha, a camp and another amazing place that influenced the life of one of them. Who will be on the edge of that very roof, and who will decide never to climb it again? Why? Starting this movie, none of the crew knew how it would end. Part of the video footage was shot by the heroes of the film themselves.

Listening to Moscow

Moscow has become a home and stage for artists from all over the world. Music in this city sounds without stopping: a cosmopolitan Venezuelan who settled in Moscow is preparing the presentation of the album of his band – an important event of the underground rock scene. A Chinese pianist from the Conservatory, who is in love with Rachmaninoff, is preparing for a serious exam. American and Kazakh are experimenting with formats and looking for a listener among the neighbors in the entrance, inviting them to an apartment party. The Cuban ensemble once again takes to the stage of the restaurant with national songs and dances. A Ghanaian drummer plays with a gospel choir at a Protestant service. Each of them exists in its own small worlds, accessible to the listener; and these worlds make up the musical landscape of Moscow.
