Blue Max

Blue Max (1997) shows a woman looking out of a window, but also working with extreme close-ups: The street, her neck, the window, her knees, the floor and her toes, brought together by the sound of a passing train. Her ears, her mouth, the wall and the door. The sparkling glass of a window and the young woman on top of a naked young man and later the shadows on the wall of both of them. A telephone is ringing and the clouds in the blue sky are travelling by while it all turns into a rape. And the calmness of both of them is quite irritating when they later watch TV together. FILM THE PSYCHOMMUNITY REEL.1

The live concert movie centers around the last day at Yokohama Arena during his first tour "HIDE OUR PSYCHOMMUNITY - Hide no Heya e Yokoso". Hide's ideas and stage gimmicks were constantly changing and developing even during concert tours. Another surprise about this video is that in 1993, Hide already foresaw that there was going to be a hardware that allows viewers to enjoy films in multi-angle mode, and because of that idea, the clip for "Doubt" was filmed in multi-angle mode. That film footage was shelved till now that finally DVD carries that feature.

The Life History of True Slime Molds

This science film explores the ecology of slime molds, a type of soil microorganism, through three years of observation and filming. This masterpiece was completed at the age of 91 by filmmaker Genichiro Higuchi, who has received international acclaim for his "visual thesis" that explores the mechanism of cell differentiation in cellular slime molds. Since their birth on Earth 1 billion years ago, true slime molds have survived by adapting to a variety of environments. This film uses time-lapse photography under a microscope to capture the rhythms of true slime molds, which cannot be seen with the naked eye.

悲しいだけ

My brother took my brother. A woman, always frustrated, forces him to pick pockets and rob people just for the thrill of it. A man who resists but continues to be an accomplice with infinite tolerance. Is it the man or the woman who is desperate to keep his partner in line? It is the woman's brother who comes between the frustration and tolerance that seems to swell endlessly. But as he makes her apologise at the graveside of her parents, he also commits the sin of lying in order to keep his love alive. There is very little expository dialogue. There is very little exposition in the film, but it is enough to convey the feelings and circumstances of each character. The structure, the script and the acting are the foundations of a film that succeeds in depicting the birth of a new love triangle in a cool and realistic way.

KATATSUMURI

Give it your all, give it your best, give it your courage. Akane is withdrawn and unable to communicate well with others. She is looking for a job, but can't find one, and her younger brother, who lives with her, lectures her about it. Her hobby is to go for walks in the morning when the town is deserted. One snowy morning, Akane sees a man carrying a red TV and follows him to the rubbish dump. Akane is fascinated by the man's unique atmosphere, and takes the TV home with her. She dismantles the TV and makes a snail object from its parts. The next day, Akane is trying to return the TV with the snail hidden in it, when she is spotted by the man. She rushes to turn back, but decides to hand over the TV to the man. The town is covered with snow and is very quiet, and the protagonist never speaks. This is the director's way of reading the beauty in things that are often overlooked, and it leads effectively to the ending, in which the protagonist steps forward to communicate.

blue (World / 2)

Carrying an 8mm camera fitted with a wide-angle lens and an ND filter, I descended the mountain while turning the bulb crank, performing long exposures along the way. With each step, the body swayed. That movement was inscribed onto the film through dappled sunlight filtering through the trees. The blue of the sky, the white of the clouds, and the green of the leaves merged and mixed directly on the film surface. This work marks the beginning of the “light drawing” series using 8mm film. While employing the methodology developed in the previous work Prominence, this piece moves away from its static approach. Instead, it embraces the unavoidable blur inherent in the process and incorporates it more actively, treating motion itself as a dynamic element of the image.

Tamako's Tale

Elusive memories flash in the back of his head. Visualising the people and landscapes as they are there, as casually as they are there, should be a difficult task, just as the protagonist struggled with the writing process. However, the film succeeds in vividly depicting the subtle atmosphere felt only in primary schools and only in junior high school, thanks in part to the fine performances of Watanabe Sayaka and her friends, who brilliantly play everyone from primary schools students to preparatory school students. There are no particularly dramatic episodes, but after watching the film, you will feel nostalgic for all the people in the film.

The Secret Purple

Fumie returns to her room where she lives alone as if she is escaping from someone. She immediately takes off the underwear she was wearing and washes it. You stink. She sniffs her washed panties, curious about what the stranger has just said to her. At the cinema where she works part-time, a colleague, a projectionist, stalks her, and Fumie's heart slowly begins to race. The film is a more eloquent and naked account of women's lives and their true feelings about menstruation. The film is a raw but lyrical portrayal of body odour, vomiting and other things that everyone tries to hide, as well as the fragile friendship between women, which leaves a strange aftertaste after watching.
