What does it mean to inhabit or occupy a landscape or a frame? To conjure up time? These are deceptively simple questions that the artist Isabell Heimerdinger gives us an opportunity to ponder in her film SOON IT WILL BE DARK. The context is a stretch of coast, a tropical place where, dotted in the background, a few old, dilapidated colonial buildings survive. A patch of countryside, half-village, half-forest, bordering the sea, and where our gaze falls on a man as the days go by, while he busies himself with his task – from one spot to another, conscientiously clearing the land around the buildings with a machete in the luxuriant undergrowth of a dense forest of majestic trees. Measured, considered, precise and respectful movements…

Climate change has reached the indigenous Nenets people in the north of Siberia. The nomads' herds of reindeer move on thin ice. The warming in the Russian Arctic is becoming dramatically visible. Huge craters open in the thawing permafrost and expose dangerous viruses and bacteria. Forest floors dry out and the taiga catches on fire. The pack ice off the coast is melting and depriving polar bears of their habitat so that they approach human settlements in their desperation. The changes in the nature of the Arctic Circle combine with the measurements of researchers and observations of the indigenous people to form a disturbing overall picture: In the Russian Arctic, Pandora's box has been opened! The film team had the chance to shoot in regions that were been restricted areas for decades. The documentary shows in impressive and depressing images already existing effects, phenomena and ominous interlinkages of global warming.

On the outskirts of Buenos Aires, there is a neighborhood built around two cemeteries. Amidst virgins and pagan offerings, the elders recite memories and forget ghosts. Children invent their childhoods with graves and hammocks. Oblivion is a territory where these creatures glide, feeling the passage of time, even though they are no longer part of it. Fears wander among the shadows of the disappeared; there is silence where voices should have been, and the everyday becomes ritual.

For the first time in 80 years, Labour Day 2020 is experienced in confinement, everywhere in the world. At the end of April 2020, as Labour Day is approaching, I am sending a cinematographic letter from Paris to a friend living in Tokyo. The two capitals are in a state of sanitary emergency because of the Covid-19 virus. As Labour Day 2020 is approaching, the memory of Labour Day 2018 in Tokyo came back to me in a dream. I describe what I am able to detect from Paris, whose inhabitants are confined and watched, day and night. At the same time, impressions of 2018 in Tokyo come back, impressions of the fiftieth anniversary of Labour Day 1968, from the march to Gotokuji temple, up to an unforgettable meeting, a stroke of luck.
