A train rolled into Tamsui, a charming harbour town full of historical and cultural complexity. European-style architecture tells its colonial past, while Fujianese immigrants' influence stays present in local people's everyday life. Celebrated photographer and cinematographer CHANG Chao-tang captured Tamsui in the 1970s on film, creating a nostalgic yet melancholic concerto played by missionaries, fishermen, and tourists.
Soji-ji (1979) is a video work documenting a chant recitation at a Zen temple. The chant recited by many monks does not proceed in unison like group singing. Each monk recites in sync with his breath, so that the intake of breath occurs at different moments. That is to say, each monk articulates the chant differently. Since there is no unified division, when the multiple chants overlap, an endless wave of chant (sutra) appears as a collective density or modality (at the same time, each monk’s steps form a totally different rhythm from the individual chants).

1930 Manchuria: Seong-Jin, a member of Korean independence army, is arrested and tortured by Suzuki. Seong-Jin’s tells his colleague Min-Wuk the location of funds. Min-Wuk puts the money into the stomach of a dead hog and floats it down the river. Soon, Min-Wuk is captured by Mokosan, a gangster from Peking and Ye-Ji, a barmaid. While Suzuki arrests all of them and kills Mokosan, Min-Wuk, succeeds in arresting Suzuki and escaping, as he continues his journey along the river to deliver the funds.

In the 1970s, the boat people of Un Chau Chai in Tai Po lived in wooden huts in extremely cramped and horrible conditions. "Ode To Un Chau Chai" tells the story of boatman Dai-Shing, a gambling addict whose wife works her fingers to the bone to support their large family and whose father helps out by selling dried seaweed.
Zhi Xiang, new to Rome, resented his brother Zhi Yuan's arrangements and grew close to the Gao family. Zhi Yuan, once a singer, now worked as a porter after a skiing accident ruined his voice. Zhi Xiang, burdened by debts, considered quitting school, but Zhi Yuan urged him to keep studying. Zhi Xiang met Zhu Dan Li, a wealthy girl, and spent time with her despite his financial struggles. She insisted on accompanying him, but he refused to skip classes. Zhu Dan Li later returned to Rome, and Zhi Xiang, unable to arrange anything for her, realized his limitations. Zhi Xiang, immersed in art in Switzerland, forgot his studies. Zhi Yuan, thinking Zhi Xiang was in love with Yi Hua, tried to guide him. Zhi Xiang returned to Rome after feeling guilty, but his art failed. Zhi Yuan fell ill from overwork and was hospitalized. Zhi Xiang took his brother’s job. Eventually, Zhi Yuan recovered, married Yi Hua, and they prepared to return home.

Furusawa also acted in the underground theatre group Theater Yakōkan (Night Theater), which had ties with Matsuzawa as well, and in his later years was active under the name Kubikukuri Takuzō, but this film is a valuable document of his early convulsive performance.
