Mas Merah

Based on a bangsawan story by stage veteran M. Babjan, ‘Mas Merah’ concerns the titular character who is daughter to a family with two feuding wives. Her mother is Mak Merah, who shares a husband (Pak Sagai) with Mak Gelam. Unfortunately, the pair of mothers are not on good terms with each other, often resorting to verbal abuse and catfights to settle their differences. The animosity and resentment get so far as to incite Mak Gelam to injure and kill Mak Merah. After her mother’s death and accusations of impropriety against her, Mas Merah is forced to leave her family and kampong to seek refuge in the wilderness. There, she meets Awang Sulong, a prince who is born and raised in the forest as a consequence of the king’s blind belief in the slander of his mother Puteri Mayang Mengurai. Together, they seek to do good and reverse the atmosphere of lies and betrayals clouding the kampong and the royal court.

The Bus

The struggle for civil rights has been one of the most important issues of American life for the last fifty years. In August of 1963, groups from all over the country journeyed to Washington D.C. for a massive demonstration, and this film is a fascinating document of this event. Celebrated filmmaker Haskell Wexler ("Medium Cool") traveled with the San Francisco delegation, photographing and conversing candidly with the participants. He has succeeded admirably in capturing the significance and drama of this historic trip.

Compass Rose

In this bizarre character study/satire of the Cafe Cino/La Mama/Andy Warhol subculture, Dewey is a young actor/hustler who has just had sex with an older actress, Miss Gloria, who talks about her lifestyle as a 'compass rose'. After Dewey leaves, Gloria has over some 'medical doctors' who give her 'medication' involving a blood transfusion. Dewey returns home where his girlfriend, Olive, arrives and shows off some of her latest wardrobe and plays around with him, despite his lack of interest in her. Dewey phones his hippy friend Allen, also a struggling actor and sells drugs on the side hoping to finance his first directing gig. Meanwhile, Brandex, another bare-chested actor, flirts with Cathy, a dimwitted actress/stoner who debates which blouse to wear for the upcoming show.

FALN

This 1965 documentary portrait of a civil war is today a remarkable time capsule of Venezuelan political and social history, and valuable background to the ongoing social conflicts in that country. FALN chronicles key events of the era, from the 1958 overthrow of dictator Perez Jimenez, and the flawed attempts at social reform by Romulo Betancourt's government, to the 1962 emergence of the national liberation movement- the FALN. The FALN engaged in rural and urban guerrilla struggle throughout the Sixties, but, failing to achieve its desired coup d'etat or to gain the support of the nation's poor, the organization had largely dissipated by the end of the decade. A compilation documentary incorporating both archival footage and original scenes shot by members of the revolutionary movement, FALN draws parallels with American foreign policy in other countries, particularly Vietnam.
