The Outhouse: The Film 1985-1997

In the mid-1980s outside this college town, home of the Kansas Jayhawks, punk rock history was being made in the middle of a cornfield. Where the pavement turned to gravel, in a small, primitive cinder block building, bands like Fugazi, the Melvins, Rollins Band, Gwar, the Circle Jerks, Body Count, Social Distortion, Bad Brains, White Zombie, Descendents, Sonic Youth, Green Day, Fishbone, the Meat Puppets, Helmet, and Nirvana played to all-ages crowds, a raucous scene of misfits and anarchists on the margins of youth culture. This was The Outhouse. Small, dark and sometimes dangerous, it quickly gained a reputation as a haven for the bands other venues were afraid of, and the kids who loved them.

Golfe

Golfe is an adaptation of the 19th-century bucolic idyll of Golfo and the eponymous first silent feature film of Greek cinema in 1914. The film reimagines the classic late 19th-century greek drama in a 21st-century context rethinking the recent European economic and political crisis between Greece and Germany. The new story of Golfe highlights particular ideological traits that gained popularity within the indignation movement and parliamentary politics in Greece during the time of an imminent Grexit. The film employs elements of Esoteric Nazism, Perennialism, Eurasianism, and the Third-Rome doctrine to reflect on nationalism and the dark ideological intricacies of that period.

That Summer

Albert and David Maysles' classic GREY GARDENS immortalized the estate of Edith and Little Edie Beale, relatives of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, who lived in alarmingly poor conditions. But there is more to the story: it was Lee Radziwill and Peter Beard who first brought the Maysles to the Beales, when the two set out to make a film about Radziwill's childhood. The reels of that first contact were shelved for 45 years. This documentary recovers the lost footage. Anchored in Beard's recollections and artistic vision, we are returned to "that summer" in 1972, a seductive dream world and collage of radically unconventional creative personalities—Warhol, Bacon, Jagger, Capote—practicing the art of living amidst oppressive forces of class expectation and prejudice.

Legacy

When the Live At The Forum CD and vinyl packages were released in 2016 to celebrate the three classic Numan albums, Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon, there was one obvious thing missing. A film of the show itself. So, when Gary toured those albums around the UK again last year we fixed that mistake and filmed the Liverpool Olympia show on September 16th. Gary remembers the show this way: “When it comes to playing in front of a great crowd who are with you on every beat of every song, this show would be right up there with the best. The crowd were amazing, just an incredible atmosphere for the whole night. But, as a band, I gave up counting how many mistakes we made. I think we gave up accuracy for the sheer joy of running around and having fun. It really was fun though.

Buena Vista Social Club: Adios

In 1996, Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, British producer Nick Gold, and American guitarist Ry Cooder convened in Havana to produce a Cuban-Malian collaboration. When the Malians couldn’t get visas, the team turned their attention to reviving a forgotten generation of legendary son cubano musicians and formed an on-the-fly ensemble: the Buena Vista Social Club. Two decades since that fateful first session, we catch up to these master musicians, as they reflect on the magical unfolding of their lives—from humble origins to the evolution and surprising revival of their careers, all against the backdrop of Cuba’s dramatic history. Brimming with unseen concert, rehearsal, and archival footage, this film is an emotional, shimmering celebration of music’s power to transcend age, ideologies, and class, and to connect us to each other through our souls.

Wrong Elements

Uganda, 1989. A young Acholi rebel guided by spirits, Joseph Kony, forms a new rebel movement against the government: the LRA, The Lord’s Resistance Army. An “army” that grew by abducting teenagers – more than 60 000 over 25 years – of which less than half came out of the bush alive. Geofrey, Nighty and Mike, a group of friends, as well as Lapisa, were among these youths, abducted at 12 or 13. Today, in their effort to rebuild their lives and go back to normal, they revisit the places that marked their stolen childhood. At the same time victims and murderers, witnesses and perpetrators of horrific acts that they did not fully understand, they are forever the "Wrong Elements" that society struggles to accept. Meanwhile, in the immensity of the Central African jungle, the Ugandan army still continues to hunt the last scattered LRA rebels. But Joseph Kony is still out there, on the run.
