Sons da Esperança

The documentary tells the story of the "Orquestra Criança Cidadã do Coque" [Child Citizen Orchestra of Coque]. This is the realization of a social project, conceived by Judge John Targino, in which the children of one of the most violent neighborhoods of Recife - the "Coque" - receive music and instruments lessons, forming a classical music orchestra. The first part of the documentary features interviews with many parents, talking about their experiences and how the project has changed their lives, not only of their children, but their own. Then, in the second part, we have interviews with the students themselves and watch part of the preparations for the concert commemorating the anniversary of the orchestra - and, of course, all anxiety and expectation that this moment brings to their lives. Finally, in the third part, the concert is shown almost entirety. The kids brilliantly perform orchestral pieces of J. S. Bach, E. Elgar and H. Villa-Lobos.

As Batidas do Samba

The evolution of the carioca samba beat since the beginning of the 20th century is the theme of this film. The process of introducing percussive instruments and their transformation to give rhythm the peculiarity it assumes in Rio de Janeiro is detailed. With rare exceptions, musicians, composers and percussionists from the world of samba, without musical training, are intuitive talents, who do not write scores, which increases the importance of recording this memory, guided by masters such as Marçalzinho, Monarco and Wilson das Neves.

Hauling

Often regarded as a marginal society, the recycling underworld of São Paulo - Brazil's largest metropolis - is the backdrop to the touching story of Claudines and his family. 'Hauling' reveals the day-to-day life of this man, a father to over 27 children, and of many others who make their living out of collecting and recycling material that others have thrown out. In order to do this, Claudinei routinely visits the downtown neighborhood of Santa Efigênia in his lime-green VW bus. This film shows us the intimate workings of that universe in an effort to stimulate recycling and to expose these individuals as followers of a noble and respectable way of life.

People I Could Have Been and Maybe Am

Entirely shot on a mobile phone, the film evolved from chance encounters in the streets of London: Sandrine, an attractive young woman on a mission to find a husband, Steve, a seasoned beggar, struggling with addiction and and Steve's girlfriend Precious, a poet. Blurring the confines between fact and fiction. the film raises questions about the relationship between filmed and filmmaker. The closer he gets to his subjects, the more the obstruction of his camera seems to distance him from them. Ultimately People... reveals a personal and humane space that only came into existence precisely because it had been filmed.
