Boundaries of the Heart

A small desert town in western Australia is the scene of several love affairs in this romantic drama. Forty-year-old Stella (Wendy Hughes) works at her father's hotel and bar. She receives annual New Year's marriage proposals from rodeo rider Andy Ford (John Hargreaves), who talks himself into asking her one more time. Stella's father Billy (Norman Kaye) is a former cricket star whose career ended early when he was involved in a sex scandal. She spends the night with vacationing Arthur (Michael Siberry) when his car breaks down. Andy elects not to pop the question to Stella in lieu of her one-night stand with the stranger. When Billy elects to marry June Thompson (Julie Nihill), the local gossipmongers have a field day recalling the woman's promiscuous past.

Wil Anderson - Wiluminati

Wil Anderson is great as the host of all things Gruen and a spectacular guest and commentator on television, radio, podcasts and bus rides, but he is at his best doing stand up. Usually in a show featuring an ever more contrived pun on the word "Wil" as its name. Wiluminati delivers on both fronts, and it is a cracking show to boot. Anderson never takes his comedy or his audience for granted, and now spends as much if not more time in Los Angeles trying to get even better at this stand-up schtick. This will be the final performance of this particular show, that has been polished around the world, before he returns to the pun blackboard. The results should prove...Wiluminating.

The Seen and Unseen

Tantra and Tantri are inseparable. When they secretly steal eggs from the family’s sacrificial offering, Tantri always gets the whites and Tantra the yolks. One day, however, the yolk is missing, as is Tantra. Her brother gravely ill and in hospital, Tantri starts slipping into magical parallel worlds, approaching the inevitable farewell through costumes, body paint and dance. When at one point Tantri’s mother washes the paint from her face, it is as if tenderly to expel the illusion that things can remain as they are. In long dream sequences and against the background of the Balinese philosophy of sekala – the seen – and niskala – the unseen – Andini relates how one ten-year-old girl deals with parting and grief.

Queens

Queens is an intergenerational documentary told entirely through the voices of drag performers. At its centre is legendary entertainer Doug Lucas, who reflects on the early days of drag as camp comedy, its marginalisation within the queer community and the pivotal role drag queens played during the AIDS crisis. Intercut with Doug’s memories and contemporaneous archival news footage are vibrant performances and candid reflections from a new generation of drag artists. In the present day, drag becomes a form of transformation, armour and freedom: a space to explore gender, authenticity and fantasy on one’s own terms. Juxtaposing past and present, Queens reveals drag as both resistance and celebration, as well as a living legacy of creativity and community.

Film-Work

During the height of the Cold War, the Waterside Workers' Federation Film Unit produced eleven (11) films for several trade unions on political and industrial issues. Independent film-makers worked with them to develop critical dialogue from one generation of concerned film-makers onto another. FILM-WORK looks at sequences from 4 of these films and interviews some of their makers, raising a diversity of issues pertinent to current debates in film, history and politics. The 4 films that are looked at are PENSIONS FOR VETERANS (1953, NSW Branch, WWF), THE HUNGRY MILES (1954, WWF), NOVEMBER VICTORY (1955, WWF), and HEWERS OF COAL (1953, Miners Federation). PENSIONS FOR VETERANS covers the issue of the need for pensions to be given to workers who have worked on the waterfront all their life. THE HUNGRY MILES shows the strength of the workers, the union and its democracy. HEWERS OF COAL is about the coal miners and their struggle to get better working conditions and pensions.
