The Happy Prince

UCLA Student Film, Preserved by the UCLA Film and Television Archive. Richly textured paper cut animation from the Animation Workshop, adapting the Oscar Wilde story "The Happy Prince." A swallow lands on the statue of "The Happy Prince," who used to live inside the walls of the castle, protected from the suffering of his city. As a statue above the town, he cries from witnessing the pain of his people and asks the swallow to take the jewels off his person to share with the people. The swallow obliges and in his efforts to comfort the prince, falls ill and dies.

Swimmer Take All

Popeye and Bluto are in a swimming race across the English Channel. As usual, Bluto has a million ways to cheat, and Popeye overcomes all of them to win. Some of the bits: Popeye's suit is connected to a fish hook; the fish unravels it and Popeye knits it back together. Bluto is on a raft and blows sneezing powder at Popeye. Bluto attaches a magnet to Popeye which attracts a mine (which ends up blowing Popeye much closer to the line). Bluto dumps a load of cement on Popeye.

Growing Pains

After watching a television commercial, Papa Bear decides to take up gardening but has more than his share of problems. The little bears give him a bag of 'speedy-grow' in stead of weed-killer, and the weeds thrive and take over his garden. Worms are feasting on his tomato crop, and the anti-worm spray he uses engulfs him rather than the vines. Papa Bear, worn-out, in pain and bandaged, is in his easy-chair when the same commercial, that earlier had inspired him, comes on again, and the angry bear rips open the television set and throttles the announcer.
