Song of Loyalty

Drama written by Su Shuyangin in 1978. The feature film adaptation was produced by Beijing Film Studio in 1980. Fang Lingxuan, a veteran Chinese medicine doctor, devotes himself to the research of new drugs for coronary heart disease and receives the enthusiastic support of Premier Zhou Enlai. But the Ministry of Health, controlled by the "Gang of Four," uses Fang's son-in-law to obstruct the research. Just as Fang and his colleagues finally succeed in producing a new drug, Premier Zhou dies. Grief turns into strength, and despite persecution, Fang works hard.

Director Liu, a powerful figure in the Shipping Bureau, was once on his way back to the city after an inspection tour when he was teased by the daughter of the municipal Party Secretary on the highway. He dared not speak out. His driver, Yang Yang, defied the pressure and subdued the daughter, vindicating Director Liu. Director Liu, therefore, strongly recommended Yang Yang for the position of Party Group Leader. Yang Yang discovered in the previous group leader's record book that Director Liu hadn't paid his Party dues for several months, so he went to collect them. Director Liu suggested that Yang Yang have his dues deducted monthly from the accounting department. Yang Yang reminded him that these were Party dues, not Party taxes, and that if he failed to pay for six months, he would automatically withdraw from the Party. Sister Mei, hearing that Yang Yang was a powerful official in charge of the Director, came to complain.

Dangerous Time

Set in southern China during the Cultural Revolution, the film follows Jia Yimin, head of an Anti-Revisionist Hospital Revolutionary Committee, as he purges intellectual doctors and elevates politically favored but unqualified “young heroes.” He assigns Yao Yao, a cook with only days of veterinary training, to operate on a critical patient, resulting in a disastrous mistake. Though Yao Yao admits he is unfit and asks to return to the kitchen, Jia, driven by ambition, insists on remaking him into a “model doctor” and places him on another major case. When veteran surgeon Chang Chunlai is forced to step in and save the operation, Yao later causes another crisis by bringing the wrong medicine to the recovering patient, who falls into a coma. The Yellow River Made A Turn Here

In the winter of 1969, along the barren banks of the Yellow River, 30-year-old farmer Zhao Da remained unmarried. On her deathbed, his mother entrusted him to his granduncle Zhao Tiantang. Zhao Da was romantically involved with Gou Dan, a poor girl from a neighboring village whose mother was gravely ill. Out of kindness, Zhao Da sold his sheep to help them. However, militia minister Mi Laichang intervened violently, capturing Gou Dan. Humiliated at a struggle session, Zhao Da defended her and was severely beaten. Gou Dan, in despair, drowned herself in the Yellow River. Following her death, Zhao Da's friend Shuangxi attempted to find him a wife but failed. Zhao Da, in a fit of anger, took down a "ghost marriage" notice to fulfill his mother's wish, which led to further conflict with Mi Laichang. He buried Gou Dan's remains in his family's ancestral tomb and left home in tears.
