The First Hymn

In the ancient ruins of Oxyrhynchus, Egypt, archaeologists unearthed a papyrus scrap containing the earliest known Christian hymn, complete with both its lyrics and musical notation. Analyzed at Oxford University, this discovery challenges traditional views of church history by revealing the rich musical practices of early believers. Hosted by Australian historian John Dickson, the feature-length documentary “The First Hymn” chronicles the hymn’s journey from its desert origins to its modern resurrection, as acclaimed composers Chris Tomlin and Ben Fielding transform the ancient melody into a contemporary worship piece, culminating in a live concert performance.

Instead, he flees to his favourite club, with his grieving, guilt-ridden friend in hot pursuit, desperate to find him before sunrise. Unsuccessful in his search, Terrance returns home to discover Andre waiting for him, ready to talk.

Death of an Undertaker

Shot over eight years, this hybrid documentary is set in a real-life funeral home on Leichhardt’s famous Norton St, and features an admirably game cast of actual morticians— Sparrow, a part-time worker whose fragile psyche begins to fracture in the lead-up to his first exhumation. On the brink of homelessness, Sparrow is offered shelter in the flat next door to the parlour, as the boundary between life and death – and work and self – dissolves into oblivion. Bleakly funny and formally playful.

Coconut

Nineteen-year-old bedroom rapper Dev has always been called a ‘coconut’: brown on the outside, white on the inside. Already ashamed of his Australian accent, he has given up on speaking his family’s language due to being mocked by community members any time he says a word in Fiji Hindi. His cultural displacement comes to a head when he accidentally ruins his grandpa’s Hindu funeral ceremony, knocking the urn containing his ashes into the nearby creek. Everything changes when, after a grocery shopping trip leads to mutual frustration, his sharp-tongued, non-English-speaking grandma hears Dev swear at a stranger and responds in kind. Their new secret language becomes a bridge across grief, a way back into culture and language, and the start of healing.

The Four Seasons: A Music Film

The Australian Chamber Orchestra has always forged its own path. With Artistic Director and violinist Richard Tognetti at the helm, the ACO has been producing films for over a decade, from their award-winning collaborations with BAFTA-nominated director Jennifer Peedom (‘Mountain’, ‘River’) to their acclaimed series of cinematic music films, ‘ACO StudioCasts’. Directed by Matisse Ruby, ‘The Four Seasons’ film release is the latest from this ground-breaking, world-renowned ensemble. Arguably the most popular and recognisable piece of classical music ever written, this performance directed by Richard Tognetti, highlights the profound symbiosis between Vivaldi’s Venice and the Middle East. Interspersing Vivaldi’s masterpiece with music by Australian-Egyptian composer and Oud virtuoso Joseph Tawardros, the film honours Vivaldi’s classic while giving it new life. A must-see for music lovers and cinephiles alike.
