Off to the Island

"Have you ever wanted to just leave everything behind and take off to a faraway place?" Here are two people who didn’t just imagine it but actually made it happen. Do-won and Myung-chul left behind their familiar and convenient city life to start anew in an unfamiliar place—Cheongsan (靑山). Cheongsan Island reveals itself only after a six-hour bus ride from Seoul, followed by another hour-long ferry journey. In a place where even those in their sixties are considered young, the arrival of a couple in their thirties was nothing short of astonishing. Wherever they go, their youth stands out. Do-won works as a social worker at a local children’s center, while Myung-chul volunteers at a church café. Though they are still adjusting, little by little, they are building a home for themselves on the island. In Cheongsan, a designated "Slow City" where slowness is considered an art, Do-won and Myung-chul lead surprisingly busy lives.

The Last Mermaids of Korea

The phenomenally resilient sea women of Marado Island, at the southernmost tip of South Korea, are like no one else on the planet. Six women aged in their 40s, 60s, 80s and 90s have lately been joined by a solitary young male diver, Min-Jong. Most of the women are well beyond 60. They may stumble walking on land, but underwater, they are transformed into graceful swimmers who haul in twice their bodyweight in seafood every day. These are Korea’s traditional Haenyeo: female divers who hold their breath for more than two minutes to depths of up to 20 meters. They make their livelihood combing the seabed for culinary treasures for restaurants in Korea and Japan: kelp, sea cucumbers, conchs, and, most prized of all, abalone.

TICO TICO LIFE

On the eve of graduation, I deposited the red envelopes I collected during the New Year into the bank. Meanwhile, my soon-to-start live streaming job demanded an advance deposit. Shuttling between the church, the bank, the parking lot, and the garbage dump, I remained ensnared in the system's cage. What roles are we truly playing? This is not merely the confusion of a single youth, but a symptom of an era—where everyone employs role-playing to confront the void and absurdity to counteract absurdity. The film examines the existential states across different social spaces, inquiring if we can still reclaim our true selves amidst the role-playing and absurdity.
