Shadow and Act

“Shadow and Act” navigates through the remains of Chaya Jitrakorn, once the most prominent photo studio in Thailand built in 1940 and was the only preferred studio of the dictator Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram. The film explores the studio’s 72-year archives and its owner’s personal photographs while representing the defunct studio like the corpse of the deceased Giant. The film experiments with the relationships between memory and space as well as the past and the future.

Flag of Chai

A Thai historical film based on the Haw Wars during the reign of King Rama V in 1885, when a group of Chinese Haw rebels rose against Siam and besieged a Thai military camp. The authorities launched a secret mission, sending Lieutenant Tem, a talented young officer, together with Sergeant Thon, a veteran soldier, and twenty-four patriotic troops to deliver medicine and artillery shells. Their goal was not only to supply the besieged forces but also to plant the national flag at the frontier as a symbol of sovereignty, even though they knew the mission might cost them their lives.

Dream Weaver 555

The newly released enigmatic amulet Dream Weaver 555 promises to unlock the gateway to realising dreams, offering hope beyond reach where wishes materialise within the depths of dreams. With this satirical commentary on Thai society, director Panida Petchara turns this magical trinket into a cinematic device to explore how capitalism fuels desire and inequality by banking on superstition. Even dreams are commercialised in this subversive work that throws the teleshopping-aesthetic in the uncanny valley.

Sarong Warrior

If given the choice, I would prefer to live a peaceful and content life in a community rather than participating in protests. The crucial battles would involve the defenders of the sea, who rise up to protect their way of life from being destroyed. If the community undergoes changes due to development projects, and if the sea becomes inaccessible for fishing as it used to be, and if there is a scarcity of fish, crab, and seafood, what would the situation be like? However, this battle would undergo a profound transformation as the local residents determine the development plans themselves, adapting to the needs of the community. The coastal inhabitants would face these challenges under the influence of worries, hopes, dreams, and the vision of the future. Take everyone on a journey to experience the life of the defenders of the sea, who strive to preserve their way of life, culture, beliefs, food, resources, air, and the sea.

Though the Mountains Divide, and the Oceans are Wide

"Though the Mountains Divide, and the Oceans are Wide" is a short video essay on the interrelation between childhood encounters and current realities through a personal story of the artist - Belle Phromchanya - who has moved from Thailand to the Netherlands in her adulthood. The video compiles home video footage of family trips during the 1990s taken by her father, along with video materials of a senior Thai artist living in Amsterdam taken by Phromchanya herself. The senior artist, who is around the same age as her father, has been a subject of Phromchanya's work until his sudden passing in 2020. By layering these early years' memories with the struggles of dealing with the uncertainty of daily life, the video shares attempts of capturing the temporarily of the moment - and both beauty and unsettling experience of being elsewhere.
