In Yamakita, a town in the Ashigarakami District of Kanagawa Prefecture, there is a nenbutsu chanting practice associated with the Noanji Soto Zen temple that has a history of approximately 600 years. The nenbutsu is chanted as men rotate a large strand of 302 prayer beads affixed around a pulley. This is followed by a lion dance (shishimai) that proceeds around all the houses of the village as a purification ritual.

After handsome and rich man Dong-Ni (Alan Tang) is blinded in a car accident, he becomes moody, and does not go out of his room. Ah Shou (Ye Feng), who appears dimwitted, cleverly outwits a street hawker, Ah Mou (Liu Lu Hua), who befriends him and forms an alliance. Together, they orchestrate various schemes: dining without paying, blackmailing the clients of a brothel, and renting a room to unsuspecting girls but tricking them into thinking the place is haunted, causing them to eventually forfeit their rent. Their mischief continues until they encounter Ah Chiao (Sakura Teng), a vibrant and sharp-witted individual who not only thwarts their schemes but becomes an integral part of their operation. The trio continues with their scams until an unfortunate encounter with robbers and police involvement adds a twist to their adventurous endeavours.

In the late 1970s, public concern over cultural heritage preservation began to emerge in Taiwan. During his tenure at China Television Company (中國電視公司), Chang Chao-Tang (張照堂) produced a special feature for the news program “Sixty Minutes” (《六十分鐘》), documenting sites including the Chen Residence in Yongjing, Changhua (彰化永靖陳厝), the Ye Family Octagonal House in Yanshui, Chiayi (嘉義鹽水葉厝八角樓), the tomb of Zheng Chonghe in Houlong, Miaoli (苗栗後龍鄭崇和墓園), the tomb of Wang Delu in Xingang, Chiayi (嘉義新港王得祿墓園), and the controversial relocation of the Lin An-Tai Historic House in Taipei (台北林安泰古厝). Filmed with Christopher Doyle (杜可風) and featuring interviews with Ma Yi-Kung (馬以工) and Lee Chien-Lang (李乾朗), the program documented the growing tensions between modernization, urban development, and historical preservation in postwar Taiwan.

To repay the debt, the yakuza introduces him to a job where he and his girlfriend perform a black and white show in a tatami room. However, that alone does not reduce his debt, and due to physical strain, the man develops erectile dysfunction. When this happens, the yakuza starts forcing her to perform sex with customers, and she has no choice but to comply, but the man can no longer bear to see himself sinking so low, so he takes her hand and tries to escape from the yakuza...
