Henbe

In Tōei, a small mountain town in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, a sacred ritual called Hana Matsuri ("Flower Festival") has been passed down for over 700 years. Widely respected by folklorists and ritual enthusiasts both in Japan and abroad, Hana Matsuri is not only a spiritual tradition, but also the cultural core of the local community—an embodied memory of who they are. Like many rural areas in Japan, Tōei faces rapid population decline and shifting social structures. This film gently follows those who sustain the festival amid such changes.

Lingering Shadows

Arita, Saga prefecture: While working at a pottery studio, Okubo continues to search for clay to use in his own creations. Fumi listens to the townspeople, records them, and draws an "invisible map" of the town. Seitaro rides around town on his fixed-gear bike, carrying a camera. Okubo's sister, Miu, has returned to town after wandering the world. Hands that dig the soil. Ears that listen to voices. Eyes that capture the light. Feet returning. Following the presence of "something that was once there but can no longer return," gazing at the glittering shapes of shadows, the artist depicts the figures of people who are certainly alive in this very moment.

Tomatoes are poisonous

This is a tale of tomatoes and desire: In the 17th century, tomatoes were feared as poisonous across Europe. It wasn’t until a French painter dared to face death that the world was finally able to taste the tomato’s beauty. After twelve hours of anxiety and fear, the painter emerged not only unharmed but found the flavor of the tomato exquisite, his appetite awakened. One evening, a woman prepared a delightful dish of tomato pasta with red sauce, waiting in both anxiety and anticipation for the return of a man.

Between Borders

I spent my childhood in Gangneung, Gangwon Province—a small city where the shadow of division permeated daily life. Witnessing the armed infiltrator incident in the 1990s taught me the meaning of ‘boundaries’ through lived experience. From that day onward, peace became not merely an ideal, but a ‘question of survival’ for me. Returning to Gangwon Province to seek answers, I began studying the theme of ‘peace’ and embarked on a peace field trip along Germany's former border zones with Professor Lee Dong-ki, a historian and peace scholar. Traversing the German border and Gangwon Province's borders, I began to understand the identity of the region where I lived and the ‘border city’ as a frontier of the Cold War and division. How can we transform it into a ‘space in-between’?
