Chers Émile, Louis, Auguste Georges et les autres...

A performance-projection produced for the 11th aniversary De Nevers à l'aube film Dear, Louis,Auguste, Georges and the others... An homage to the pioneers of the cinema and animation cinema. The main steps of the history of projection and the reproduction of movement are impersonated by baby Margot as she moves about on all fours. Different animation and shooting techniques are used here, all of them closed to the pioneers‚ experiments. Margot's wandering takes place on a sea shore lined with cabanas reminiscent of the film set «Around a cabana» by Émile Reynaud.

War Songs

Paul Schmidt sent me a set of five poems from a series called WAR SONGS. He treats the war in a brilliant and sarcastic way, evokes his seduction. Mark Bennett's score is itself provocative, languorous, and close to a waltz. The whole thing is a series of songs cast in the mode of melodrama, that is to say music in tandem with a narration. My contribution lies in the superimposition of war scenes, coupled with what I called an image of Gabriel: a young and handsome soldier, a personification of the good warrior, a protective image. He gives off strong impressions throughout the duration of the film. She makes him appear sometimes active and aggressive, sometimes asleep or beckoning. The film uses footage from the Vietnam War and World War II. They show soldiers marching, tanks rolling. Explosions reveal in passing our dear “Gabriel”.

The Land Is White, the Seed Is Black

Filmmaker Koto Bolofo accompanies his father, a history teacher and 30-year refugee from apartheid, on a journey back to South Africa. He had been a critic of the racist Bantu education system and the brutal disciplinary methods of his school’s Afrikaner principal. The film juxtaposes Professor Bolofo’s flight to asylum with vibrant scenes from the daily life of his village. This is not a documentary of explanation— of politics, of sociology— but an outpouring of images of the people given life by an artist and photographer.

BRAY-DUNES ET NULLE PART AILLEURS

The camera strolls "between tents and trailers, among all these humble people, as simple as their preoccupations. Old and young who all have dreamt, at some point in their lives, of leaving for some unreachable place with palm-trees. They were all born in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and have been coming to Bray-Dunes since they were little. People here play bowls, bet on horses or talk about work. Unemployment is lurking. Misery is there. And nostalgia too ". (G DUPUY, "L' Express" N° 2452)

CHEZ EVELYNE

Who has never dreamed of living in the country one day, in a small house ? In fact, to become part of that new group of people inhabiting our green pastures, the « rurbans » ? Don’t be fooled : the country is no more a paradise than the city. Where you expected to hear the birds singing in the morning, you get the din of tractors and other machines that have sometimes nothing to do with agriculture. Where you expected the straightforward and friendly atmosphere of the village café, you find yourself in the middle of old drunkards, not to mention the fights of the local youth. But at Evelyne’s, it’s not the same. For tonight, the village is having a fair…

Iles Kerguelen: l'île aux savants

13,000 km from mainland France, Crozet, Kerguelen, and Amsterdam are so isolated that even today they can only be reached by boat. No one has ever lived there permanently, except for shipwreck survivors or the unfortunate executors of unfeasible projects. But around these jagged coasts, a history of adventure has been built: that of the Chevalier de Kerguelen, who believed he had discovered a new Eldorado; that of seal and whale hunters, explorers, and industrialists who dreamed of “colonizing” these barren islands... Ruins, shipwrecks, and tiny remains tell the story, and logbooks are opened. All reflect a fascination with these islands, which seem to hide themselves away as if to protect a mystery.

Partitions

The story of a man and a woman who dance through walls and partitions in a city made of cells, boxes, rooms, and recesses that are explored from the inside, layer after layer. It is the story of a vision, which at times is unique and coherent, and other times gears down, leaving one eye after another in every room of the city. Still, beyond the explosive transformation of bodies, identities, forms, places, and glances, the sinuous choreography of the human couple remains in the spectator’s mind, one and primeval.

Ballad (Extract)

Folded projection (projection on a flat surface) or unfolded (concave / convex surface). This film is projected normally on a screen inflated by the wind. The viewer can move to either side of the concave / convex screen. When we perceive two images, the mind creates relationships of one to the other. This film plays on this ability of the gaze to build links between elements placed side by side. Filmic elements accumulated for some time took shape, gradually by juxtaposition. Material: two 16mm projectors - curved screen five meters long.
