I lost my passion for filmmaking after becoming a film major. However, I regain my passion by meeting my peers and a film director and listening to their stories.

Sunshine is a 20 year old young woman who served a sentence for drug abuse. Having found to be pregnant on her first day in prison, where the child was born, Sunshine was left with a new reason to live. Although in the past the relationship with her family was not the best, during the time in prison her relatives made sure they would write every day, and visited without fail. On the day of her release, she was carrying over 500 letters and a chance to turn a new page in her life.

An intimate reading experience of voice messages from my grandmother‘s sleepless moments. A portrait of personal memory as it is reimagined and lingers for an instant. My phone camera documents wandering figures by a lakeside at night. Across from the lake, the sight of the dissolving cityscape appears to be both infinitely close and extremely remote. This film attempts to reconstruct the forgotten and the marginalized parts of individual beings in the scope of time. The film explores what’s beyond the visual expression and flows out of the flat screen to co-inhabit the space of the audience’s reality. The viewers would find themselves roaming through the ontological existence of film, confronted with sound, light, darkness, time and rhythms, transitioning between positive space and negative space, and approaching the very ambiguity of memory.

The mannequins are having a conversation in the dark. What kind of conversation are they having?

In China, most of the young people in the countryside moved to the cities for better job opportunities. Only children and old people are left behind. They live around this river and this bridge. This dangerous bridge has not been repaired for 20 years. It seems that all the problems, the persons and the objects in the countryside have been forgotten.

The protagonist is a glass artisan who has undergone a transplant of an organ generated in an animal’s body. While hospitalized for the transplant, he is asked by his friend A to ‘make a glass vessel out of window glass from [A’s] old house’. After a successful transplant, various things go through the protagonist’s mind while he is making the glass piece.

A short documentary about kissaten — Showa-era (1926-1989) Japanese cafe — culture. Būgen is a small kissa in a suburb south of Tokyo. It was featured in the book Kissa by Kissa. Proprietor Yamane-san has survived four bouts of cancer and has run his cafe for close to forty-five years. He makes a mean pizza toast with a unique cutting style. Pizza toast is a staple of kissa culinary culture.

Professional mourning is a time-honoured tradition that is slowly dying out in Taiwan. Liu Jun-Lin is currently the youngest and one of the best-known professional mourners still working in Taiwan. The Filial Daughter captures her and her band's pre-funeral rituals and elaborate performances, which include acrobatic dance manoeuvres, sombre songs, theatrical elements and detailed choreography. The event is steeped in folkloric tradition yet wholly modern, featuring maximal lighting and pumped up PA systems.

The origin is the real story of a solder being killed by a bomb while greeting a civilian. The film tries to recapture that moment of contradiction and vulnerability using the techniques of 3D video, computer rendering simulators, photos and graphics to express the filmmaker's personal understanding of the subjectivity of this reality.

A creature on the threshold between human and monster stages a wedding ceremony with itself. It splits its body in half and walks down the aisle, stepping over its own falling organs. Two ringed hands clasp together, a kiss is exchanged, and the ritual concludes. As bodily rupture and wedding ceremony intertwine, the piece defamiliarises the formal structure of marriage as an institutional rite.

Using the concept of a ‘regulated house’, the work compares residential land undevelopable under Japanese building codes with laws restricting same-sex marriage. Artists Marina Lisa Komiya and Chihiro Suzuki embrace queerness and challenge heteronormativity by creating a garden rather than a conventional home.

"Taichung Way" is an original animated short set in Taichung, Taiwan. Through local dishes and a journey home, it follows a young person who has returned home. The film delicately portrays the taste of home and heartfelt human connections, capturing everyday streets and alleys bringing to life the warm memories of Taichung.

Artist Som Supaparinya presents the video work Two Sides of the Moon. This film recounts the lives of fishermen and fisherwomen at the beginning and end of the Moon River where it joins the Mekong, on the border between Thailand and Laos. Each place - and its people - is confronted with the modification of the river landscape by the man-made dam, but their stories and the impact on their lives are contrasting. One community has started to learn how to fish, while the other is counting the names of lost fish and tools. The concept of light and darkness derives from the brightness of the moon and its shadows, and the contrast between the two sides of the river reveals the inequality of fates.
