Through the lives of four generations of women on Matsu Island, this film traces how decades of militarised rule transformed the notion of impending war into a defining identity for an entire archipelago. Moving from an era of simple fishing livelihoods to the lived experiences at the height of the Cold War and into a contemporary mother-child relationship, the film weaves together intimate interviews that speculate on reconciling with a traumatic past and on uncertainties about the future. In one thread, a mother attempts to explain the meaning of war to her young daughter, a dialogue that encapsulates central questions of the film: how do personal stories bear witness to official history, and how does a new generation move forward from a loaded identity?

War Dance reflects on the gendered structures that shape Asian women’s bodies, drawing from the Korean myth of Sun and Moon Dogs, known as ‘Bul-gae’. Embodying their resistance and transformation through AI-powered images, it challenges the systems that render these structures unquestionable.

In the depths of winter, the Tuomao people follow their herds across the grasslands. Kaikaizi and his mother had pitched their tent on the meadows near Wild Bull Gulch Township. But during the journey, Kaikaizi was struck by the devastating news of his mother's passing. Though the Tuomao share customs with the Tibetans, they practice Islam. In accordance with their faith, the deceased must be cleansed and prayed over by an imam on the very day of their death. Thus, Kaikaizi set out alone for Wild Bull Gulch Township in search of an imam.

One day, a death god suddenly appears at the door of Morimi, a university student. By an unexpected turn of events, Morimi is granted two extra days to live, which he spends with the death god as his unlikely roommate. Morimi's concerned friends, Osumi and Mitani, visit his apartment to check on him, unaware of his curious living arrangement.

Yet, they remain distant from him. In the end, he is left alone.
