Not Human, But...

I had the chance to try making a new type of film called “In-Ear Cinema.” This kind of film tells the story using only sound—such as background noise, music, and conversations—without any video or images. The film I created is called "Not Human, But..." The story is about two teenage boys who meet up to hang out at Siam Square. While there, they see an ad for a new kind of tutoring school. They decide to try it out, and in the end, they find out that the teacher is actually an AI.

Boiler Room X FINAL Taipei

A film by Lu Xiao Wei for Boiler Room—a documentary that delves into the story of FINAL, a groundbreaking club in Taipei that has redefined the city’s underground music scene. From dimly lit staircases to the dreamlike glow of neon, FINAL is more than just a venue—it’s a cultural movement. This is where boundaries are pushed, genres are reimagined, and self-expression takes center stage. Through the voices of its founders, DJs, and the wider creative community, the film explores how FINAL became a sanctuary for experimentation, a home for those seeking freedom beyond the mainstream. Shot entirely in Taipei, the film captures the raw energy of the city: its chaotic streets, intimate club spaces, and the relentless spirit of a scene that thrives against the odds. It’s a story of resilience, identity, and the power of music to bring people together, even in the face of challenges like the pandemic.

Available Light

The film explores notions of home and belonging in contemporary society. Comprising interviews with workers at the Edo Tokyo Open Air Architecture Museum in Tokyo, and fragments of conversations with renters in that city and London, a productive dialectic opens between the museum’s preserved historical ideal of the domestic and the often unsettling realities of temporary accommodation in modern cities. Combining trademark immersive sound design with impressionistic images and abstractions, Quaintance crafts an austere, oneiric and subtly affecting portrait of residential precarity.

Touching Fish

Inspired by the Chinese internet slang 摸鱼 (mōyú) or “touching fish,” this documentary project delves into the dynamics of work and leisure within Chinese society. MoYu symbolizes a rejection of rat racing, a compromise under societal pressure, an aspiration for freedom, or simply laziness. Focusing on the delicate balance between individuals and their work, the documentary sheds light on the complexities of the Chinese work culture. Blending storytelling with striking visuals, from scenes in The Sims 4 and authentic CCTV footage to everyday moments in modern China — Touching Fish offers a compelling lens on the complexities of Chinese work culture. As it navigates themes of labor, fulfillment, and resistance, the film invites viewers to reflect on their own relationship with work and time. Touching Fish is not just a portrait of a social phenomenon — it's a conversation starter about what it means to live meaningfully in an age of burnout and overwork.

Tandem Road

Tandem Road is a documentary that follows Masato Namekawa, a veteran assistant director, and his partner Ayumi Hasegawa, on an epic road trip by motorcycle in which they try to circumnavigate the globe. Starting in Fukushima, Ayumi’s hometown, the two travelled 60,000 km through 30 unfamiliar countries over the course of 427 days. The human story at the heart of this gruelling feat is the growth of Ayumi, who wanted to start the journey to escape workplace stresses in the film industry. She initially regrets her decision to travel but the beautiful landscapes, the kind people she meets, and the bond she forms with Namekawa help her to grow.
