A film essay about the city and the passage of time, its transformations and contradictions. It is a tribute to Madrid as a great visual and sound archive of its inhabitants and locations where commerce and fauna, architecture and ladies, haberdasheries and poets, builders and destroyers of the city intersect.

When all the residents of Tokío are evicted from their houses, two kids, Emiliano and Aurelia, are forced to end their friendship. Sigfrido tormented and defenseless by the social prison that his tittle represents, finds salvation in Rotbart. In love, they decide to build a new life far from the court, that is until Odette appears a bitter princess that desires Sigfrido. She will try to seduce him with her charms.

The main character is a nameless boy (Juan Jose Ballesta) who was taught to steal wallets by his absent mother. He is able to do the trick effortlessly, using his "earnings" to survive while he looks for his mom. As he runs into an antique store owner, he might have found a trace that will lead to her. First, however, he will have to pull off a few "jobs" for the store owner, and he can't do it alone: enter a nameless girl (Maria Valverde) who gets to learn all the secret techniques the young boy has been using all his life.

In the same mountain refuge where he spent his childhood, Luís will be forced to confront his fear of death and old age, while he fights against the desire of keeping Mario by his side.

Madrid's legendary Teatro Real staged this production of Giacomo Puccini's seminal opera La Bohème, starring Inva Mula, Aquiles Machado and Jesús López Cobos in the principal roles. Giancarlo del Monaco directed for the stage, Michael Scott designed the sets and costumes, and The Chorus and Orchestra of the Teatro Real provide musical accompaniment.

As in the novel of the same title from Camilo Jose Cela, "La Colmena" is a sad composition with the stories of many people in the Madrid of 1942, just the postwar of the spanish civil war. The main theme of the film is the contrast between the poets, surviving close to misery under the Franco's regime, and the winners of the war, the emerging class of the people that makes easy money with illegal business.
