Toshiyuki Tanaka will bring several items selected from his collection of more than 100 items of haunted objects and explain them. The guest ghost storytellers will tell ghost stories based on the objects themselves, the stories associated with the objects, and keywords that appear in the commentary. On the Nanhai Peninsula, there is a seaside cemetery where the Yang family’s tombs are built on the coastal rocks, facing the water. The director’s grandfather’s family archives mention that he was born on this small peninsula. Around 1949, amidst the various social upheavals, the director’s grandfather and his family members faced divergent fates due to different historical issues. Two decades later, another period of unrest saw him subjected to injustice and brought about his untimely death. Like many of his generation, he left behind only scattered words and fragments of a story that slowly faded from the family’s memory. The director wanders through the lonely graves, ancestral homes and relatives’ houses on the Nanhai Peninsula, sifting through the dust-covered relics in her grandmother’s room as the objects which haunt her hometown undergo a second death.

Life is surrounded by many beautiful things, but sometimes we overlook them because we are immersed in the heavy burdens of life. But when we try to consider the things around us, we will find a small, peaceful place somewhere in life, through the door, through the surface of a leaf, through the window of the bedroom, etc. Our lives have both happiness and suffering, depending on the time and destiny to lead.

The directors majored in MA Creative Media at the City University of Hong Kong. When directing TAIKWUN (2022), they used the photos taken in Tai Kwun as the material for animation creation.
