Cheonggyecheon Medly: A Dream of Iron

"The Cheonggye stream runs through the center of Seoul. Today a popular urban recreation area with clear water, promenades and leafy plants, the Cheonggyecheon was, until only eight years ago, a filthy rivulet under a busy freeway. In the years following the Japanese occupation and during the Korean War, part of the area around the stream was taken over by merchants who made use of the military war scrap, thus helping to lay the foundations for the country’s economic recovery. With the renaturalization of the stream, the neighborhood is now threatened by gentrification.

Dream House by the Border

The director, who herself comes from a family near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between North and South, explores an issue largely forgotten between the Korean War and current tensions: In the 1960s, North Korean refugees were settled here in houses provided by the Park Chung-hee dictatorship for propaganda purposes. For decades now, they have lived along the line of confrontation. The most personal border zone runs through their houses, where individual history and collective memory meet.

We Were There

Mt. Gasherbrum IV in the Himalaya is famous for the "shining wall," the west face that has tempted many climbers. In 1997, the Korean team led by Cho Sung-dae and Yoo Hak-jae successfully developed a new route through the wall to the summit, where only two teams in history have been at the top. They couldn't get sponsors for their expedition and lost most of the equipment and food because of avalanches, but they managed to do what seemed impossible. The route was named 'Korean Direct,' and officially documented in the American Alpine Journal. The documentary shows us what happened in Himalaya 16 years ago, using dozens of videotapes shot by the team. It also includes interviews of the group, currently living a life distant from climbing the mountain. Why did everybody forget the most significant achievement in Korean mountain climbing history?

The Theatre of Disappearance

The first part is like a postcard from a realm almost too surreal to be true, a study of daily life in the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea flecked with such unusual details that not all of them can be real. The second part manipulates time, a wordless portrait of clay vessels being produced in Morocco that slows down and speeds up without warning, imbuing unspectacular actions with detachment and wonder. The third part distorts space, a hand camera tour that moves through apparently connected locations as if carrying out a single movement, although these industrial facilities, cityscapes, meadows and exhibition spaces are not side by side but scattered across the globe.
